I've only read "The Fall of Reach" but it was very good. It's set in
pre-Halo times, and details how the Spartan program began and developed.

"The Fall of Reach" is the story of the Master Chief before the events of
the game...

"The Flood" is the story of the game, with an attempt to add more characters
and plot.

""First Strike" takes place between Halo and Halo 2.

They're not very well written. If you're into science fiction, there's a
tonne of really good authors you'd be better off sticking with... Isaac
Asimov, Arthur Clarke, Phillip K. Dick, Bruce Sterling, Tad Williams, Greg
Bear, Orson Scott Card... The list goes on and on. Avoid gaming fiction at
all costs. It's schlock.

That's too harsh. I found that The Fall of Reach effectively develops John
117's character, and that positively affects the gameplay experience because
the player knows so much more about him. For Halo fans "The Fall of Reach"
is well worth the easy read.

Alright, I'll concede that the book gives some nice background information
on the character of the game and the events that led him to being where he
is, and that having the information gives the game some more depth than it'd
normally have (not that it's lacking in depth, it'd make a better movie than
some of the stuff Hollywood's been kicking out lately). I just don't think
it's anywhere near as good as some of the authors I'd grown up reading the
stuff I'm still reading these days.

Mind you, it's better than some books I've picked up lately, so maybe
"schlock" is a bit harsh...

The world needs more Asimovs. It's a sad state of affairs.
