I'm contacting you on behalf of eWeek, MentorNet, and Symantec
Corporation
about an exciting new software development competition that will take
place
during eWeek (February 22 - March 1, 2006), with prizes totaling
$18,000.00.
Your help is requested to distribute the following announcement as
widely as
possible to reach interested students in computing (residing in the US
or
Canada, age 18 or older), and especially those who are women, people
of
color, or others underrepresented in computer science and engineering
.

EWeek and Symantec are sponsoring this competition to increase
awareness of
career opportunities software development and to encourage students to
pursue engineering careers. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that
in
the future, the number of jobs in the professional technology workforce
will
outnumber available, qualified candidates by two-to-one
.

i dont mind equal oppurtunity for everyone, but it seems nowadays people are begging the"minorities"(african americans, women, etc.) to apply, and this almost gives them anadvantage at getting the job over my "white anglosaxon american male" ass. it really is starting to make me irritated at the whole thing. i dont want to call it reverse discrimination because thats not what it is; it just regular discrimination. why must I(being a white male) have to suffer because of what people did in the past? i didnt torture anyone, nor did i own slaves, nor did i stifle womens right to vote/run for office/ or even hold them back from a job. why should it be "top priority" for them to get jobs first, not based on merit, but based on past wrongdoings? i have noticed on campus here at auburn, there is a "society for black engineers", "society for women engineers", and even a "society for foreign engineers", but there is not a "society for caucasian engineers"; why? because people want to be so damned politically correct that they are scared they might step on others toes or offend them, because "in the past <insert hurtful events that stifled on groups progress here>..." im going to the student affairs today to see if i can start a "society for caucasian male engineers" and lets see what happens. guaranteed it will be frowned upon. im not saying that because i am white im more special and more qualified to do a job, but apparently race/sex does still play a big role in hiring today. and then to top it off well in the email posted above it states that the job field will contain two to one job openings for qualified candidates. well hell, if i was able to apply for such a job and kept getting turned down because of affirmative action issues, finally im sure i would get fed up and search for employment elsewhere and most likely in a different field, any rational human would, i mean hell, i got to pay rent and feed my family just as everyone else does.

The question, if not phenomenon, of minority candidates getting jobs simply because a company or institution has to be seen to fill a certain number of roles with minorities is not a new one. No smoke without fire, but the same could be said vice versa under the old way of doing things. If you truly want equality then there should be no talk of minorities at all.

oh i agree wholeheartedly, if im not as qualified as someone, i guaranteed i wont go bitchin and moaning that it was unfair or i was discriminated against, but thats just me; there are people who will use this to their advantage. it just sucks thats all. personally, i wouldnt mind having true blind interviews with someone/company. IE: the company interviews wil no knowledge of what the person looks like or heritage or race. i know there are drawbacks to this. but i think overall, the qulaity of work would improve, dont you think?

Yeah, it's reverse discrimination basically. Now they're trying to target them because they're under-represented. No one ever questions how available they are for the position.

My last company was forced on a project to use Minority based companies. Not really a big deal. The problem occurred when the minority based companies were too small the handle the job but we had to use them because of the contract.

It descriminated against using a white owned company. Yet, it's perfectly fine to tell someone to use a minority based company. I think they should start saying "prefer non-minority-based" companies over "prefer minority-based."

Just another way to screw the white person out of working hard.

Its only discrimination if it goes against a minority. If it helps them, even if its discrimitory to whites, its called affirmative action.

My father worked for a big city fire department. He would always get into discussions with this one black guy. He brought up affirmative action with this story.
"The fire department is going to hire 30 new recruits. They take 1 thru 28 based on test scores along. They skip 29 and 30 and take say 37 and 41."
He asked the black guy if that was fair. The black guy said "sure it is. We, blacks, have to be paid back for all the years of discrimination."
Notice no where did my dad say anything about ones color.
My dad said "29 and 30 were black" - the ones skipped over.
The black guy said" You cant do that its discrimination!" - works for them its ok. Works against them its not.
So whats happening is that people that werent smart/skilled enough to pass the firefighters test are getting the job simply because they are a minority. So now you have people that dont really now what there doing putting other people at risk simply because they were a minority.

I dont mind not getting a job because the other person was more qualified. But I'd be really pissed if was only because the other person was a minority or a women.
I think, and its been proven, that affirmative action now hurts minorities more than it helps. They expect things to be handed to them becuase they are a minority instead of having to work for it. Companies have to higher minorities even if they arent qualified. Who does that help? No one. The company looses production or even contracts because they have people that cant do the job correctly. They cant fire the person for fear of a lawsuit. In the mean time the company must higher another person that is qulified to make up the difference or do without. Also someone that is qualified doesnt get a job.
They want "equal rights" but arent willing to accept the rules unless it benefits them.

I lost a job to a female who was later fired 2 months later. When they wanted me a back I said no. She had less than 1 year of experience, wanted a higher pay rate than myself, and she had big boobs.

Equal opportunity/Affirmative Action.

If you have 100 openings, 85 can be white but you must hire 15 minorities.

They automatically assume everyone discriminates in hiring. Hire the 15 and lay them off if they're not performning. Just have test results against someone of equal experience that can show they were not performing.

I was reading an article where two people were qualified at the same level. They were both asked to take the same test. The guy scored less while the female scored higher. He was laid off. He called it discrimination. They pulled out the scores and said you took the same test as her and scored lower. You're the one we have to lay off. If we lay her off it will be discrimination.

That's basically all that needs to happen. If a minority was able to score as well as other non-minorities (Whites basically) then they're able to stay. But if they can't hold on, you have a reason to lay them off and seek a qualified canidate.

/shrug

I was out at the club last Saturday and they wouldn't let 3 black people in because of their dress. The black guy yelled at the bouncer "you're discriminating against me because I'm black" (Just as the bouncer lets a well dressed black person into the club).

The bouncer turns to him and tells him to keep using that excuse for the rest of his life.

Obviously, the bouncer wasn't discriminating because he 1) let the next black person in 2) he was following a dress code to which the people didn't fit within the guidelines. (no tennis shoes, must wear fitting attire)

Same basic thing happened to my brother in NJ. He was in line to become a State Trooper, but because the minorities get a score boost he was pushed so far down the list that his tests expired before he got near the top. He chose not to reapply - their loss. He's now on the SWAT Team in a town near Atlantic City. Probably better for him since he has a family.

Mike.

File a Discrimination lawsuit. Not even the ACLU would support you on that one.

Having lived in corpus Christi for seven years with a predominant Hispanic population I could see firsthand in little ways how I was discriminated against. Everything from service in the local store to renting an apartment.
Now that I live in the metropolitan Atlanta area I see the same thing. Atlanta has a predominantly black population so naturally most of the government employees in the area are black. I've had to deal with the social security administration and the Georgia department of labor recently. You speak of getting the cold shoulder. I could get absolutely nothing done on the telephone and it wasn't much better in person.

The thing that chaffs my ass Is that you would think people who have been discriminated against for so long and know what it really feels like would be the last ones to discriminate themselves. That certainly isn't the case though. It's like, now the tables are turned and I'm going to get revenge. I think that's the really sad thing about this whole scenario.
