Howdy all,

I'm just wondering, have any of you tried the IE7 beta yet? I'm phising for opinions and so on… I'm noticing the differences between IE and Firefox generally, in that I find web pages look different in IE (almost more like they're images...Update: That's cleartype, and hazzah for I've found how to turn it off... see below). It's also slightly more sluggish than Firefox, though this might just be the beta I'm thinking.

In terms of functionality I'm liking IE7, considering it's a beta. It's catch-up on the competition, but works well. One thing that niggles me is the unorthodox way they've laid out the navigation bar and suchlike, but otherwise I'm thinking it gets a thumbs up. What do you guys think?

Haven't tried it yet but now you have me thinking I might want to try it. Maybe on my work computer.. I'll go download and test.

See this page if you're looking for it, anyone. Ironically the animation didn't work when I first went there to download the browser, in Firefox.

It's a beta, so bear that in mind when using it and so on.

I noticed cleartype is automatically turned on or constant. I don't care for it since it makes the letters thicker and stuff. Trying to find the setting to turn that off.

The color scheme fits in too nicely with Tom's Hardware which makes it a little odd to switch to at first.

They made some layout changes on it.. it's nice. I'm hoping you get more control over icon placement and sizing.

I don't like how everything shares the same toolbar though. I have the Links menu out that I use for common websites. It shares the same line as File/Edit, etc. That might be a little annoying.

I wouldn't mine rearranging the location of where the menus are though, that would be helpful. Granted, I have 3 minutes using it so far and need to mess around with it more.

You can turn back on the options toolbar and go to internet options->advanced for all those options, I've just discovered

Drop down the tools bar on the right, and go to classic.

My problem with IE is that they don't have an original bone in their body. Netscape had them beat. They copied netscape. Now Firefox has them beat so they copy firefox.

It's getting lame.

Good eye.. I was looking under Advanced tab in Tools. I walked through all those settings.

Under Multimedia is the section to turn off Clear Type too.

I'm noticing slow highlighting on links. Every time I try to close IE completely, it crashes on me. I think I need to restart again though and clear out some things and it should resolve itself.

Yeah, I'm finding that in the forums and with the links in the navigation bar of THG. It's a bit annoying.

I have a VoIP Shoreware system here. When I log into the device it tells me that some items might not work and I need to upgrade to IE 6.0 or higher.

Hmm.

Is the bookmarking system any better?

Favorites/Bookmarking is my primary bitch about web browsers. They suck regardless of browser.

You can have multiple home pages loaded I believe.. I haven't tested it but you type in multiple addresses and they all can load up and let you switch between them.

I don't know about Favorites/Bookmarks what you'd want more out of it..

But in messing with it they did add some additional features.. Add Tab to Favorites, or Add to Favorites.

It's about the same.. not much has changed on it.

Finding problems in highlighting things to copy.

Also, my font sizes tend to change randomly... When I put "..." it changes the way it's typed in this box. Really weird.

But as I type, it starts off normal then compresses. Maybe it's an issue with the clear type.

Reply to Riser

Since I got ignored...

I checked out their website and their "preview". I don't see anything new in there. Do they have a single new feature in there that makes it worth switching from Firefox?

Multiple homepages in firefox is done by dividing the sites with the |

Curse you Aaron. just when I get fire fox working correctly and abandon K-Melon, you have to post about the new version of IE.

I can't remember if I have ever issued one of these or not but here goes.

I just installed IE beta2. It took a couple of minutes to get use to the new toolbar layout. Other than that it seems to be the same. Although it seems to indicate most web pages have script errors. Maybe a few bugs with reading HTML, SHTML and XML. Probably doesn't like HTML and XML syntax integrated in a web page.
That's my two cents. I'm probably wrong about the syntax errors though.

my guess is its probably the most css2 compliant web browser and therefore doesnt like HTML pages and prefers properly coded XHTML pages which is the newer standard....

IE and "standards compliant"..... WOW this must be a real new begining.

if they truly are going to become standards compliant it will be a good day, and CSS is a good standard to be compliant to.

Ohh poor you... alas, I have to stay at the cutting edge so that you only have to read about it

An article shall be forthcoming, so keep those opinions rolling... anyone else think it's sluggish in loading pages?

What? You posted something? :?:

I would say that Microsoft isn't out to outdo the competition but to really work on adding features to IE, regardless of what others have.

The features in Firefox and Co. comes from what IE lacked. Those are products created because someone felt IE was lacking perhaps. Thus, they made their own.

I don't see IE as a product that is there to be innovative and win the browser market share. I see it as a product that is designed to keep Windows OS's safer - it's geared more towards helping out Windows.

Besides, what's in the market share for browsers anymore these days? Who cares.. there isn't really any money in it as far as Microsoft is concerned.

I'd go as far as to say Microsoft's IE7 is only there to help keep Windows from having issues when people surf.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve always used IE.

Sure looks different. As long as everything works ok, I’m happy. Any new features will be welcome. Not that my lazy a$$ will ever find them, hehe.

The current beta will only run on Windows XP. Soz etc... I'm actually a Win 2K fan, but had to relent and go to Fischer Price Windows (err, XP) to keep on top of the game.

I decided to uninstall IE 7. I have my own web pages that I use for personal use and “Edit with Microsoft” was either missing or placed somewhere else. I also didn’t see the “Tool” button for quick editing. I used strolling text, until a window update killed that. Anyone give a hoot.

Reply to jiffy

I haven't messed with it extensively yet but I have installed it at home.

Have you figured out how to get the "new tab" to pop up to a webpage instead of a blank page?

I also have problems when clicking links from Email, IMs, etc. I have to cut and paste (which is a fawking pain when using Lotus Notes).

Still doesn't shut down smoothly when I exit out for some reason. I don't like the Home Button layout or the back/forward button sizes or locations.

I liked the Home button in the middle and larger.. and Back/Forward buttons are way up there. A little color change would be nice.. something to make those buttons stand out more.

Right click on a link and click open in a new tab, you mean?

Reply to Aaron McKenna

Nay.
If you click the little button to the right of the tab "New Tab" or "Ctrl-T" it brings up a new tab, but its Blank:about instead of the home page.. Most of the time I use a new home page is because it opens to google.

I'm going to mess around to see if there is an option for that. Doesn't make sense not to have it..

Reply to Riser

You could just alt home or something. I thin the presumption is that you get your home page in the first window, and anything you open thereafter is for other purposes.

I agree that it is mostly playing catch-up. All of the features were available in other browses and are already developed beyond the functionality that IE7 really gave. I think its going to come down to security and added functionality/compatability with other programs in VISTA to make it worthwhile.

Reply to sigur

I never got into other browsers.. didn't really see the big 'problem' everyone was making out to be..

what's the hot keys in each to switch between tabs without using the mouse?

I tend to stick to the keyboard a lot.. I liked IE because I just had to alt+tab to the window I wanted.. it was simple.

Haven't tried figuring it out in IE 7 yet though.

Reply to Riser

Firefox is Ctrl-tab to switch tabs.... I got annoyed at having to alt-tab through multiple IE windows and programs...fills up quick.

Reply to sigur

You can generally use ctrl+ whatever to control all that inter browser tab stuff.

[off topic]a friend of mine passed along to me this program called app rocket where you hit alt-space and start typing program names and hit enter to launch them. That gets rid of the mouse. May want to check it out [/off topic]

The biggest annoyance I saw with IE7 is that they still had the "find" dialog box. Why do they continue to use that?

Amen... hopefully they'll have a more Firefox'ey rolling search box in the final version. If there's one thing I'd miss from Firefox specifically, that's it. Even Opera uses the same type of find as IE.

I have an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad at work. They come with Windows but they don't make the Windows key on this thing.

I have a Dell keyboard at home that has the windows key though. greatest little invention.

Reply to Riser

Ctrl-Esc = Windows key for keyboards without one (and those with one).

Mike.
