Just bougfht a new hard drive, due to what I thought were
errors with the old one. I kept getting strange display
errors on the screen, like mutli coloured bars all down
the screen, or the image on screen going distorted.

I have installed the new drive\and started to go through
the Win XP install procedure. When it gets to the format
drive to convert to NTFS stage the display errors come
back, and occasionally the machine re-boots its self.

I've ruled out the hard drive because 1)It's new, and 2)
the same errors were happening with the old drive.

So I don't know whether it's the M/B or graphics card.

Any help much appreciated.

Most likely Graphics card or monitor. However, before doing anything try
removing and reinstalling the graphics card drivers

That's hard to do when they are all gone. Remember, the OP is clean
installing XP, and this problem crops up during that reinstall.

Try a different graphics card.
