Recently bought a Dell 8100 Inspirion. Nice laptop when it wants to work. Finally got fed up with the crashing (after a simm replacement) and called to get a replacement laptop. First the tech support guy laughs, then transferrs me to customer care. Customer care tells me it has to be authorized through tech support. Go back to tech support and I'm told that its quicker to get a refund and buy a new system then to do an exchange. (3 weeks on an exchange, wtf?) So now I'm waiting for the mailing labels so I can mail it back and get a refund. I really liked it but after that I might just not get another...
Oh for anyone curious, this is what its doing:
Random crash in Xp (ok that's not totally unexcpected, except in my experience xp/win2k only crashes with hardware probs)
machine now wont boot (says there's a ram problem)
Will boot after a bit. I assumed my xp install was fubar and I go to reinstall
Machine now can't read some files from the CD rom.
Eventually decides to install and runs fine for a few days..then it happens again
Other oddball things was it telling me the system ram went from 256 to 24 and the HD diagnosic having numerous errors, then run the tests again and no errors.
Bizzare imo.
Specs:
P3 1ghz m
ati radeon 7500 m
20gig drive
15' ultra (dispite other posts this was very clear at 1600)
Some built in sound card
nic/modem built in
I feel your pain. I have brand new I4100 and it already have two problems, HDD and electrical noise. The tech supports are good tough. They are polite and waiting time is not that long (max is like 10 min every time I call). Anyway, I already change the HDD once and now the laptop emit the high pitch electrical noise which can be hear obviously and amplified when plug in AC. The tech support identified the problem as motherboard problem and ask me to send the machine in so they can change the motherboard. I think the idea of changing the motherboard for this brand new laptop is kind of rediculous. So I just called customer care and they will send me a return label. I might probably reorder the machine tough. It is the best deal for money but I guess you get what you pay for. I used to have the new Sony PCG-GR250. It cost much more than Dell at the same spec but the machine is beautiful and absolutely quiet (only very low HDD sound can be heard from it). Too bad I need a faster cpu + longer + better warrantee. Sony tech support waiting time is also VERY long (I wait on the phone almost 30-1 hours everytime I call).
BTW, how long it take for you to get the return label? and did you get refund yet? how long it take?
Mocca
Nvidia or ATI, it's all depend on what you like and system optimization
I haven't gotten the labels yet They said 3-6 days and it's been over a week. I called today and got the addresses that I can mail it myself - I'd rather eat $30 shipping then a laptop. Oh and now they are saying they didn't get my defective simm back, so they want to charge me. I'm not getting another Dell. Gateway maybe, least I can just walk into one of their stores and return it.
