My Firewire 1394b external hard drives are not recognized since I installed
Windows XP SP2. Is there an update or solution to this problem short of
reinstalling Windows XP without SP2?

I recall quite a bit of discussion about this when SP2 came out but
haven't heard much since then. Have you tried reinstalling your chipset
(motherboard) drivers again (or whatever controls your FireWire port)?
I have not heard any update on the situation, but I do remember
complaints just before and just after the release of SP2 to the public.

I have three external FW drives on this box, on SP2 for three weeks, and am
having no problems with FW or anything else.

Firewire A or B? It is the 1394b that was having the problems just
before the release of SP2. Not sure if it was truly fixed or not.
