Hi,

I need to get a cheap inkjet for my daughter at college. I'd really like
to get her a low-end laser, like the HP LJ1012, since most of her
printing will be black and white text for classes, but she really wants
to be able to do color once in a while. I also know the laser would be
cheaper to operate in the long run, and perhaps last longer, but...

Anyway, I was looking at Amazon at the Canon i560 for $85,the i860 for
$130, and the Epson C84 for $85 less $20 MIR Amazon coupon I have, but
saw this on a Circuit City review:

BEWARE. All the Canon printers have a Waste Ink Tank that is not user
servicable. After changing print cardridges a couple of times, the ink
tank gets full and you need to return your printer to Canon for service.
The service runs about $60, while a newprinter cost around $130. All the
waste ink tank is an absorber but Canon has to enter a code to reset the
printers memory. The printer will not run without this code. Stay away
from Canon printers. Or if you like Canon buy one that does not have a
waste ink tank. i will return my i560 today.

Is this true?

I do have an i560 at home, but don't use it enough to know about a waste
tank.

Is the quality of the Epson C84 ok?

Sincerely,
Bruce

Well, I see the waste tank issue has been beaten to death, and not a
problem for the average user. Seems like the printer will wear out
before this error message appears. The useful answers are at the bottom
of this listing:

The I860 would be a great choice. I think Canon still has a rebate
offer on their site, you may want to look..

Here ya go.. heres 30 bux on me.., LOL

The I860 would be the way to go for the money. The speed for black
text is amazing and the photos, well, the best around.

I left mine unused for weeks at a time with no ill effects. Frequent
use is always recommended though.

As far as the waste tank, don't even give it a thought. No one could
use an inkjet printer more than me and the self cleaning cycles it
does, never once tripped the warning.

good luck in your purchase.
