AGP card for the venerable P3B-F r1.04

Hi,

My V7700 deluxe card recently conked out after I hibernated my pc so I'm
planning of getting a new AGP card.
What would be the best agp card that is compatible to the P3B-F r1.04? I
plan on overclocking from 100 to 133 FSB, so I'll be needing an agp card
that can run at 89 MHz and last a long time. Additionally, I prefer a
card that would NOT conk out out if hibernate. I'm running Win XP Pro SP2.

an agp 2x card...but if you want to overclock, don't waste your cash
on an agp card because you cannot change the multiplier. Look around
as there are 32 and 64 meg ati's, 7000 I think, that will run just
nicely on the pci slot...and thats the multiplier you can control...

Do you plan on 3D gaming?

Do you need DirectX 8 or 9 support?

If none of the above, a basic Matrox G400 Max would do nicely
($20 used on eBay). I've run them even at 1:1 on a 100MHz FSB
for years with no problems, and their DVD/TV out quality is much
better than most cards sold today.

If you do plan on gaming, or need DX8/9 support stick with an
Nvidia based card (e.g. 5x00 series), and stay away from more
recent ATI cards such as the 9x00 series. They won't run at
anything much over standard 66MHz.

It might be that Sparkle have some AGP 3.0 Universal Cards supporting
3.3V.
I saw a product picture about a GeForce 6800GT. Spares for 1.5 and
3.3V!!!

But I also saw pictures about a Parhelia (Matrox) with two spares, and
they sent me a 1.5V only :-(
There are Parhelias with 3.3V sold, but probably not new one, anymore.

Best you see yourself. Go to Sparkle, maybe that GeForce6800GT with
3.3V is available!?
Would make a nice system.

I am pretty satisfied with GeForce4 ti4xxx Power. Playing NwN with
everything fully on (4xAliasing), 1024x786 - smooth! (1Ghz P3)

I believe that you'll need a card with a 3.3V AGP slot.

(Note that the picture on the bottom has the I/O on the right, so I'd call
it backwards with respect to the image of the graphics cards.)

If you search www.newegg.com for AGP 2X/4X video cards, you'll mostly come
up with Radeon 7000 graphics cards. They are inexpensive, but may be a
downgrade from your V7700.

I used a Geforce 4 TI 4200 card for quite a while on a mainboard with a
440BX chipset (Soyo 6BA+IV), like your P3B, with the FSB at 133 MHz. It was
entirely reliable. (I didn't use hibernation, though.) Those cards aren't
available new, as far as I know. The Geforce MX4000 seems to be available in
the Universal AGP format, but I think that it could also be a downgrade.

I'd go with the 4200, if you can find one. (A 4400, 4600, or 4800 would be
good also.) You'd get a card that supports DirectX 8.1 in hardware, if it
matters.

The "best" card not requiring active cooling would be a Radeon 9000 or
9200 (not SE, but one with 128 bit memory bus). I actually have two of
these (Sapphire Radeon 9000 Atlantis, 64 megs) in use, one of them in -
would you've guessed it - a P3B-F 1.04 running an 800EB at full speed
(i.e. FSB133). Issues? None, neither with stability at 89 MHz nor with
hibernation. The machine runs Win2k, can't remember whether it's still
running the 4.9 Catalyst or whether I've already updated this to 4.12 as
here (something newer doesn't really make sense). Not long ago I even
had the opportunity to check out Suspend to RAM (S3) after retiring the
ISA sound card, and somewhat to my surprise it works perfectly fine.
Only the Cheetah 36ES doesn't like it too much...

If you're after maximum 3D performance without noise considerations, I
agree that a GF4TI (4200 should be sufficient and isn't so huge) would
be hard to beat. Better stay away from Radeon 9500/9700, these don't
work all too well in 3.3V-only AGP slots (sometimes switching to AGP 1X
is required to get 'em stable). It's not surprising that newer chips do
not even support our oldies any more.

As I've found out! My trusty P2B-F (even older!) is still running
fine, with Win XP Pro SP2 like yours on a P3 1GHz at 100 MHz FSB (this
is a fairly rare Slot 1 CPU with a 10x multiplier, Intel didn't supply
them for very long). Once my ATI 8500 gave up, I couldn't get the
board to run the ATI 9700 Pro or any other ATI card for that matter.
On my DVI panel the pixels flutter and colors act weird.

I've had better luck with Nvidia based cards though. AOpen Aeolus
FX5200 and an ASUS FX5600XT, both ran fine and very reliably. Then
again, I'm not overclocking anything. The AOpen is the current card
with all connections I need and passive cooling. I was able to get
this whole system down to whisper mode by adding a Samsung HD which is
virtually inaudible.

I find that a 1 GHz PIII with 440BX chipset is still very usable for
normal Office and web use with XP, given enough RAM and a Promise HD
controller for faster disk access.
