I replied to the thread, not to you and my comments were
intended for the OP. I assumed that was obvious.
XPs built-in software burning program only supports CD-R.
To burn a CD-RW with packet writing you need third-party
software. All DVD burning requires third-party. The DVD -R
drive can use the XP software to burn a CD.
Your last sentence is the key, third-party software is
better (easier, more flexible to use.)

I don't know why you replied to me, but you are wrong on
this. You can to burn CDs (obviously not DVDs) with XPs
builtin writer. A DVD burner can do either. I have Nero 6
Ultra Edition, and I have both a DVD burner, and a CD-RW
burner (dual drives). I can burn CDs in the DVD drive if I
have it setup as I stated to the OP to do, using XP's
builtin system. But I obviously use my software, because it
is better.
