Word of advice: Get a nForce2 dual channel board.
I just did, after a SIS735 board (Leadtek 7350KDA), and the the change in
performance is amazing!
Of course, I did have PC3200 ram, which wasn't used to its full potential,
but never the less, there is a staggering difference.
Old setup: SIS 735, 1024 Mb PC3200 ram@266 MHz, XP1700+@2000+, SBLive,
Radeon 9700@360/291 core/mem.
New setup: The same except nForce2 chipset, Soundstorm sound from same, FSB
raised from 133 to 200 MHz (266 to 400 DDR) and dual channel memory.
Difference:
Far Cry was stuttering on the old setup on 1024x768, settings was decreased
to High on most (as opposed to Very High), medium on shadows, special
effects and particle count. AA medium, Anisotropic set to 8 (double of
highest setting.)
Even then especially the Dam part was barely playable, with bad stuttering
going on when many entities was around.
New setup:
All settings was maxed out, except textures on High and AA still on medium,
Ani staying at 8. Everything is smooooth..
And damn, it's beautiful
I just replayed the Dam part, and it was amazing: Much more plants to hide
in, Even details like the air shimmering over the lava was there
And now
it was playable, very much so. No stuttering at all.
A nForce2 board, with Soundstorm or with an Audigy2, and a XP3200 should get
you flying
And then, if you dont mind overclocking, you can save a bit of money by
going with a XP-M 2400 or 2500 instead. They are a bit cheaper than a Barton
3200+, and they usually clock equally high.
