Hello,

We have a Deskjet 5100 printer that is about 4 or 5 months old
now. It has just recently started developing a problem: The
printouts will exhibit artifacts which are very fine "hair-like"
looking. They don't appear on the same place from printout to
printout.

Changing the cartridge did not help either. Does anybody know
what causes this and what is the remedy?

Regards.

Have you changed paper brands?

No, we are using the same type of paper. The person that uses the
printer
says that it almost seems like the ink is not drying correctly and as
the
roller or print head moves, it is smearing the ink (in a very fine
hairline like manner)across a small section of the page. We are not
using refilled carts, but genuine HP ones. We also have been using
this cartridge for a while and this is not a new one or it hasn't been
changed recently either.

Regards,

My guess is that there's dirt and fluff inside the printer that's wiping across
the paper before the ink has dried.

Hi Mike,
Check your ink cartridges for any build up or debris that might be causing
the hair-like streaks. There are instructions on this web link for cleaning
the cartridges. These instructions were written for a previous printer
version and are not entirely correct for your printer. For instance, the
carriage will not move to the center when the door is opened. Simply open
the door and wait a few seconds for the internal printer parts to stop
moving before removing the cartridges.

I hope this solves your problem!
