I am having a problem restarting my PC.

PC boots perfectly from off but whenever i try to restart (no power down) it
fails.

It passes the BIOS startup screen, tries (supposedly) to load Windows XP
then restarts itself before any XP screens appear.
If left it'll just cycle through endless failed restarts.
After the first failed restart i get the XP startup screen offering Safe
Mode, Normal Boot or Last Known Good Configuration etc - none of these work
and it'll just restart itself.
If i power down and then boot up it boots perfectly.

The PC has worked perfectly for a couple of years now so i suspect a recent
hardware change to be the culprit.
I've made two changes in the last few days:

I upgraded from 2 X 256MB PC133 to a single Samsung DDR400 512MB.
I reset BIOS after changing memory modules and it seemed fine - until i
tried to restart it.

At the same time as the memory upgrade i also removed a RealMAGIC PCI DVD
decoder card as it never got any use.
I removed the RealMAGIC software and then the device driver from Device
Manager before i shutdown and removed the card.

I also added a USB WiFI adaptor a week or so ago but had no restart problems
after that - the restart problem is since the other two changes.

I have a second installation of Windows XP on another of my PC's partitions
and i get the same restart problem when trying to restart either
installation of XP.

Here's my PC's specs:
K7S5A Pro
Duron 1800MHz
Samsung DDR400 512MB (single module)
Radeon 7000 AGP
SBLive Digital PCI
DVD-RW and a DVD-ROM
3Com NIC
MSI USB WiFI adaptor
SmartM Bluetooth dongle (not currently connected - so not suspected of being
the problem)

My PC is not overclocked but i am using the HoneyX BIOS (have been for ages
with no problems).
I choose 'Best Performance' settings when resetting the BIOS.
My memory timings are set:
CAS latency: SPD
RAS active time: 6T
RAS precharge time: 4T

The Samsung DDR part number is: M368L6423FTN-CCC.
I ran MemTest86 for half an hour earlier and got no errors, but need to use
my PC so i haven't left MemTest86 to run for any longer.

Has anyone got any ideas?

I can post more details if required....

Thanks.

Martin.

I guess i could put my PC133s back in and it'd work perfectly but obviously
i want to use my new DDR400 module.
Else what's the point in upgrading?

I've used the BIOS 'Set Best Performance' setting to hopefully have it
auto-configure for my new memory.
But i suspect that i need to tweak the auto settings - maybe not(!).

I can try the BIOS 'Set Optimal Defaults' next and will do that when i next
reboot.

'Til then i was hoping maybe someone could post what would be maybe the
'realistic' memory timings that i could try.
(Based upon me having a Duron 1800 - limited to it's 266FSB).

Or even better is there a webpage that documents what the various memory
timings actually do so i can experiment?

I think i'll pay the forum at
http://p199.ezboard.com/bk7s5amotherboardforum a visit and post my problem
there...

Thanks.

Martin.
