Just posting this here by way of reference, in case anyone else comes
across the problem using a similar ide configuration.

Recently built a system around this board ( using latest official bios
) with an AMD XP 2400
No initial problems, but when I plugged in a secondary hard drive ( in
a removeable caddy, set as a master, with a CDRW as a slave on the
same channel ) I got hard drive errors when running a DOS backup
routine via Windows.
Also had an intermittent exclamation mark showing on the secondary ide
controller in System Properties.
Having tried the usual solutions ( reinstall the ide drivers, reset
the IRQ/PnP config ) and found that the problem persisted, I
downloaded the latest SIS ide drivers and installed them ( and then
ran the DMA98.exe file ).

Problem solved - secondary hard drive works a treat in all situations.

Point of note; when updating the ide drivers and pointing to a
relevant directory, the drivers were found in the W2K folder - and
this after having found that the setup program to install the drivers
had failed to do so.

Regards,

Which driver did you install? Are you running Win2000?
Was it the SiS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller or the Secondary IDE controller
(dual fifo) & Primary IDE contoller (dual fifl) or all three of them?
Thanks

I'm running W98SE ( should have mentioned that! ) - which is why I was
surprised to find the drivers loaded from the W2K directory ( on
selecting Update driver in the Hard Drive Controller properties panel
- after finding that the setup program made no difference at all ).

The hard drive controller section now reads:
Primary IDE controller ( dual fifo )
Secondary IDE controller ( dual fifo )
SIS PCI IDE UDMA controller

The primary and secondary drives appear to still be running on
Microsoft drivers as installed by the OS.
Originally the last entry read SiS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller.
The driver, as downloaded from SiS, is ide204a.zip
The driver detail panel for the SIS driver gives the date as 10-21-02

Something else that might be of interest - in the IRQ resource panel I
now have:

14 SiS PCI IDE UDMA Controller
14 Primary IDE controller ( dual fifo )
15 SiS PCI IDE UDMA Controller
15 Secondary IDE Controller ( dual fifo )

By rights this ought to throw the system off whack - but I've thrown
everything I can at the system to check the integrity of the hard disk
drivers and so far it hasn't skipped a beat.
I'm still puzzled as to why the driver update wizard would have found
relevant drivers in the W2K folder - can't see anything of relevance
to W98 there - but it works.

I'm minded to remove the Microsoft IDE driver entries ( I've Ghosted
the OS - always a good idea! ) to see what happens...

Regards,

Win98SE
Mine reads:
14 SiS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller
14 Primary IDE controller [dual fifo]
15 SiS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller [dual fifo]

My K7s5a is a rev 3.1 (not Pro)
I wonder if changing the Sis Dual PCI IDE Controller to the SiS PCI IDE UDMA
Controller would be of any benefit?
Anyone know?
My system seems to run fine now and I wonder if I could really screw it up by
changing that driver?

I didn't notice any pickup in speed after installing the new drivers,
just more stability.
I'd be inclined to leave well alone if it's working ( especially on
THIS mobo - unless you have the facility for making an image of your
existing installation ( such as Norton Ghost ).

It looks to me like your list is the original setup, as loaded by the
OS installation - in which case I assume that the two entries for each
ide channel boil down to the first being the name of the driver and
the second being a description.
I wish now I'd taken the opportunity to test the speed of the drivers
before and after the switch.

Regards,

Follow up:

The driver update proved unstable.
Since my original post the whole system seems to have got more and
more iffy, to the point where even if the hard drives function, the
software crashes several times a day.
I can find no conflicts and no apparent reason for the crashes, and an
hour's work with Ghost and a screwdriver restored my trusty old
Chaintech board in the case.

Ah well, some you win...

Regards,

The K7S5A is affected by the "bad capacitors" problem. I re-capped my
K7S5A and it's now fine.

I did a visual check, having come across such a problem before with
other boards. They all look ok - no bulging caps,no leakages.
Given the time it would take to swap them all out, and the possibility
that it might not make a difference, I'll just wait for another make
of board to come my way.
