I have an older K7S5A and would like to upgrade the cpu from the
Athlon XP 1600 that I have in there now.

I’m currently running 512meg of PC2100 RAM. and my Bios is version
1.21.11. I was wondering what faster cpu this old board will handle
comfortably without much overclocking?

I was also wondering if there is a bios upgrade that will allow the
board to see a 160gig hard drive as a 160gig and not a 135gig?

I’m also running Windows XP Pro on the system.

The best CPU you can get is a mobile 2500 barton. It is best, because it
is unlocked, so you can use your 266 mhz bus, and still be able to crank
up the muliplier as high as the K7S5A will allow.

as you bigger hard drives. You would need a PCI IDE controller. they are
cheap, like $30, and with them, you can use as big a drive as you want.

That's a good theory except the K7S5A has no means to set the
multiplier and the mobiles boot with the 'low power' multiplier active
so it'll run at 1Ghz, or so.

I have a mobile 2500 barton in my K7S5A rev 1.0 booted up as 2000Mhz unknown
cpu runs ok, havn't bothered upgrading bios.
Here in UK Ebuyer.com still have 2800XP's @266 FSB slightly cheaper than the
mobile 2500.

The honeyX modified BIOS for K7S5A will give you limited OC-ing ability
though i have never tried it i have read lots of raves about it on the forum
links shown in other posts

i think if you were going to stick with old tech CPU i would be tempted to
upgrade the board to older but solid OC-able mobo as well somehing like
NF7-Srev2 or A7N8X-E dlx

that way i can live vicariously through you
because i know how it is...
i can't let my two K7S5A's die/go either, while they can kick i help them
kick on

mine are running 2200 XP, 1600 XP

I'm running HoneyX and yes, it does, the FSB. But no BIOS can make a
K7S5A do multiplier changes as there's no hardware on the board for
it.

You sure that isn't an estimated 'PR' rating, as in XP2000+? because
even if it was working 'full speed' it wouldn't be 2Ghz on a 266FSB,,
it would be 1.867GHz.
