Hi all,

Last week both my optical drives (CD and DVD) died and were not being
detected by the machine, a DELL Dimension 8400. So I called the DELL
Support line and they took me through a trouble shooting session on
the phone. One of the excersises was to delete some filters from the
current user control set of the registry.

After that, when I booted the machine I found the keyboard not
responding. It works ok during the boot up phase and in BIOS (Setup).
My account is password protected so I can't even log in. I did manage
to log in by copying and pasting the password from another
non-adminitsrative account on the same machine. However even after I
uninstalled the drive for the keyboard and restarted, it still does
not work. In the device manager it shows the keyboard (Microsoft
Natural PS/2 Multimedia Keyboard) with a yellow exclamation mark and
"Devide does not start (Code 10)" message.

I would have reinstalled the OS (XP Professional) if the CD drive was
working, but that is no go. I even downloaded MS Intelli Pro and
installed it but nothing happened.

I have aready tried the following:
1)Uninstall diver and restart
2)Download and install latest driver
3)Plugged in a USB keyboard (same behaviour)

Can any one advice me on how to get my keyboard working? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Have you tried using the device manager to check the
keyboard properties? It could be disabled in the profile.
Also, there is a troubleshooting button in the device
manager.
Download TweakUI or FreshUI and check the keyboard settings.
TweakUI is part of Power Toys XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
FreshUI http://www.freshdevices.com/

You might also boot into safe mode and select the
administrator login and then create a second user account,
with admin priv to use for further troubleshooting. Then
reboot and login to the new account. You'll be able to fix
the old account keyboard setting. Just be careful about
what changes you make. Do one at a time, and reboot to see
what happens. If you make two or more changes, you'll have
trouble knowing what caused or fixed the problem.
