Hi All,

Just picked up a 4PCA3 for a dedicated speciality machine. The speciality
app is embedded in a Redhat Linux distro. I pop the cd in the drive and
boot the machine. It partitions the disk ok (120 Gig WD) and formats ok.
It mounts the cd to copy and then errors out trying to copy the install
files. This is a consistant outcome.

On a thought, I tried to boot knoppix. It hung up. Consistantly. I tried
to boot pclinuxos but again it hung. At that point I did a complete full
blown install of Mandrake 10. I surfed the net, did a major-megabyte
online update over several hours. Works just fine.

Decided to flash the bios. Downloaded the newest version and flashed. Now
it boots from knoppix and pclinuxos just fine but still will not install
the redhat distrobution with the embedded app. Are there any known
problems with the board?? It sure does run really sweet......

I am running SuSE Linux 9.0 on this board very successfully, with the
latest bios. Do your logs give any indications or are there error
messages on screen? There could be several reasons for your problem, I
guess. Have you tried a safe install, if that's possible - noapic,
apci=off, with the stuff turned off in the bios, etc? I'm wondering if
the highpoint controller might be an issue but I don't see why if you
don't have any disks attached to it. Recent kernels have highpoint
drivers built in. Are you using a sata or a pata hard disk? Just
wondering if some really ancient kernel is struggling with sata. But
this is all just guessing.

I did see a post somewhere suggesting turning on the smart detection for
hard disks in the bios as this caused some distro to hang somewhere, but
again this may very well not remotely apply in your case. Alternatively,
it could be a flakey cdrom drive ... who knows.

:)

I have lots of good experiences with my 4PCA3+ and linux. The only
thing that doesn't really work well is the onboard gigabit-card, but I
was warned about that by the seller.

I'm running a P4 2.4/800 @ 3.06, using 3 Gb pc2700 memory and lots of
hard disks:

hda: IC35L120AVV207-1, ATA DISK drive
hdc: IC35L120AVV207-1, ATA DISK drive
hdd: _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hde: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, ATA DISK drive
hdg: WDC WD2000JB-32EVA0, ATA DISK drive
hdi: Maxtor 33073H3, ATA DISK drive
hdk: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, ATA DISK drive

Does copying the redhat-cd to harddisk and installing from harddisk
work? Does memtest86 run OK?

Good luck,
Jurriaan

The first board I got, had troubles with the gigabit I/F causing spontanous
reboots, the board was replaced, and had been working 100% since, both Win2k
& Fedora/knoppix/mandrake.

Did you have to upgrade the bios to get knoppix to boot?

No, it worked out of the box - however I can't remember the bios version. I
think its was dated around december
