A friend has an IBM thinkpad 760E with Win98SE which will only run in safe mode. The problem started after her daughter was playing a CD and cruising the internet. It seems that the hangup occurs when it is trying to load the driver for the CD-ROM. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

I've tried "REM"ing out the CD load entries in the Autoexec and Config.sys files, running scanreg /fix, both with no luck. And I've thought of reinstalling Win98 on top of itself but wonder what the pitfalls of this might be.

That usually fixes problems with 98.
