I tried to do some research on the web, but could find nothing of any
use, so thought that posting here may be my best bet.

I am attempting to rebuild a Dell SmartStep 100N laptop, Yet for some
reason, the system will only see 1,397 of the folders in the i386
Directory of the Windows XP CD. (sees the same number in the 2000, and
2003 Server directories as well.)

I have checked the CD on other systems, and they have no problem
finding the files, so i know they are all there.

When attempting to boot from disk, i receive an error as the setup
first begins about an error in a .inf file on the CD, though I know
that file is correct because I have used the same CD to install on
several other systems, as well as a Virtual PC 2004 install. all
without a problem. The line in the .inf referrs to a file that the
system cannot see.

This system has the latest BIOS updates,

I would think the problem would be with the CD ROM drive for that
computer. If possible, try a different CD ROM drive. If not possible,
try cleaning the drive and try it again. Check the disc for scratches
or smudges too.
