I have a computer about 4 years old and it keeps dying (will not turn on).
replacing the Motherboard battery fixes it but the battery goes flat again
flat after a couple of months.

I thought they lasted years?
I am definitely using the correct battery type.

They do last years if something is not draining the battery; similar to
leaving your car lights on in the parking lot for hours.

Something is draining the battery but can't think of what it might be. Did
you check the motherboard manufacturer's web site for newsgroup or forum and
ask? Maybe tech support?
