...is Alpha Centauri. Damn, this game is great, even after the 100000000th hour.

well i would like to say something like turrican2 or manic miner (jump, touch a pixel, bastard bastard bastard start again) on the commodore just so i could point out the fact im a real old gamer but id have to say Zelda Link to the Past. Not before or after has a game affected me so much and left me miserable when it ended. It was perfection and I can still hum the tune played at the end :)

Really tough topic to contribute to. I've been playing (home computer) games since 1978 (my dad bought a Tandy TRS-80 model one). As far as I am concerned computer games are still getting better and better (yes, also the gameplay) in general (although there is plenty of rubbish around of course).

So best game ever is probably going to be something fairly recent. A personal favorite of mine is New World Order, but noone knows that game (check my sig linky if you're curious). I really enjoyed Elite (on a commodore 64), spent a lot of time on the Sierra adventures Leisure Suit larry, Kings Quest and Police Quest, Doom, Quake, System Shock 1 and 2 were good. Recent stuf: FarCry, Thief3, Doom3.

Because I'm a FPS fan, if I really have to choose (which I obviously can't), I think I will go for half-life (1). I'm looking forward to HL2 and hope it may be as ground breaking as nr 1 was.

reason no one knows about NWO is cos it was so good looking when released it took a beast to run it, it was buggy and crashed more often than it ran and so no one played it and as a result of no single player no one would buy a game they possibly wouldnt get to play much and finally it was a CS ripoff and was released in a time when CS ruled the roost completely..... anyway why am i bothered to say that??? i do hear from lan party mates that NWO is actually still played much to my surprise.... in fairness it looked really good....

I mostly agree with you. Actually it still looks good, even if you put the game next to FarCry or DooM3 it can hold its own (and that for a game that was released over 2 years ago), and I'm not kidding. Of course it's outdated now in a number of areas (like only particle physics on ammunition) but it still looks very nice graphically speaking, and I really dig the gameplay. It's now at version 1.5 which is the final patch I think. It's no longer buggy. This latest version has rain effects included and it's the best rain effect I've ever seen (you need to run the custom map Hotel to see it in action, none of the other maps uses it).

Sorry for digressing on the topic.

I guess I mistitled the post, Alpha Centauri isn't my favorite game, but it has taken the most hours out of my life.

I'm asking about games you can play for hours, even years after it was released...

Ahh, retro gaming...

Favourites:
Deus Ex (PC)
For me quite simply the best FPS I've ever played. Beautiful graphics (for its time) intelligent plot, and flexibility of character/progression.

Civilization (Amiga)
The first really engrossing God Sim (forget Populous). I lost months of my life to this game.

Honourable Mentions:
The Bard's Tale (C64)
IK+ (C64)
Wizball (C64)
Street Fighter II (SNES)
Syndicate (Amiga)
Monkey Island Series (Amiga)
Mariokart 64 (N64)
Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
UFO (PC)
Dark Age of Camelot (PC)

August 23, 2004 11:05:45 AM

how can u name perfect dark as a great game??? it was graphically to ambitious for the n64 which gave the game in many sections a barely playable framerate (yes i had the extra memory) and futhermore the graphics were all blurry... the game itself was awkward to play as well because unlike its predecessor golden eye, perfect gave u enemies on different levels to yurself making targetting them awkward... on the upside i had many many hours of fun simply playing against bots in multiplayer... that was fun. slow motion, only crossbows and cloaks and instant death. One part of the multiplayer bugged me tho thanks to a bug and that was the drug gun or drug crossbow bolt... if u got drugged then died u would still be drugged when u respawned... silly thing that playtesters should have eliminated as it ruined one of the most fu weapons in multiplayer

For me, for now (2004) it's Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 and his expansion pack Yuri's Revenge.

But sure now this game is too old and "ugly". But in past was so Extraordinary !

Maybe a day C&C Red Alert 3 will exist...
But before of course we need remove from "the hands"
of EA company which is a real bad game company (read any support)
:)

OMG i can't belive this is a "best game ever" topic and nobody said anything about Diablo 2 - king of multiplayer - .single player's good enough not to get bored fast (i finished the game 13-14 times playing all chars in expansion and i still play it) but what really shines is multiplayer, friends meeting on europe server to see who's got the best barbarian is just great, hunting for the best item for your necroman and other such stuff is so enjoyable for a game from the last century. i could never delete it wich cannot be said about other games and with every new version that blizard throws at the "hungry for more mouse abuseing" people the game seems to reinvent itself , totally diferent gameplay and features , makes you start all over again for the 10-th time just to play by this version's rules.
Conclusion: the chemistry on this one is almost magical everything is just right and IMO it's the best MMORPG ever and since i like RPG's i'll say "best game ever".

Yeah, I was hooked on Warcraft 1 and then moreso 2 (and the expansion) until I started playing Starcraft. All great games for sure. Blizzard does it right.

OK, while NOT the best game of all time, I picked up NFS Hot Purtsuit 2 for $10 many weeks ago. I am an addict. Multiplayer and Single player alike. I went through the championship tree and more than halfway through the Hot pursuit tree, with occasional breaks for online racing. Also been playing it on the home Lan with 3-4 of us racing away. I'm dying to get some buddies over for 8 player fun. It is a blast and well worth the $10. Even though I always liked racing SIms not arcade racers, NFSHP2 is very well done and loads of fun.

I just had to admit that and get that out of my system. Hopefully I'll recover from this addiction soon. I'm sure a dose of HL2 will cure me.

Diablo2 multiplayer isn't an MMORPG. An borderline ORPG maybe, but definitely not an MMORPG. A real MMORPG blows it completely out of the water, a good example is UO (old UO).
