After I installed service pack 2, I uninstalled it due to numerous problems,
most of which I have been able to fix. However, I now cannot use my dvd ram
drive. The device manager says the drive is working properly, yet it will
not read a data cd, an audio cd, or a dvd. When I try to open the device
through My Computer, I get an error that says "d:\drive not accessible
because of an I/o device error." Remember, there was not problem prior to
sp2. I'm using a matshita uj-810 on a Toshiba sattelite notebook. I
contacted Toshiba and they were no help at all. The device's web site stated
that they do not offer support for this particular device, it has to be
obtained through the computer manufacturer. Obviously, I'm up a creek here
and I could use any advice.

So I have Matshita UJ-810 dvd-ram "DVD/CD-ROM drive" on
my Toshiba Tecra laptop.

Today I took the cd that came w/ my handphone to install
someof the synch software. The cd wouldn't load and
eventually a dialog box popped up saying it couldn't read due
to an IO error. But no other diagnostics.

I rebooted. Same problem.

Cold booted. Same problem.

I put in other CD. Same problem.

I put the nokia cd into my PC. After a lot of laboring it
read the cd and launched into Nokia's shitty install program.

I found that weird.

So I stuck a DVD-R I burned (on a diff pc) into my laptop.
It read it! and I was able to browse that DVD-R.

But it appears (after checking others) for some reason I
couldn't read the CD's.

I looked around online but couldn't find any specially useful
support for this thing. IT sure sounds like something queer
with software.

I uninstalled the driver and allowed windows to reinstall it
after a reboot. that did nothing.

The only other weird thing I have done is repeatedly try to
use CloneCD to backup a program. (which never
worked). That was the last time I succesfully read CD's with my drive.

The CD part and the DVD part use different lasers to read the disks. Use a
CD cleaning kit and see if it clears up the problem.
