Sound Card Problems

Hi i recently have upgraded my system and this included buying a new mb. For
some reason the new system wouldnt boot up xp so i reformatted and
reinstalled xp. Ever since the sound gets garbled everytime the cpu comes
under a light load (eg opening up word). The sound is onboard. Ive
uninstalled the drivers, made sure they were out of the device manager and
installed fresh drivers but it hasnt done anything.
Any ideas apprieciated.
No conflicts in the device manager..

p4 3ghz
gigabyte 8ipe1000 pro2 mb
768mb 266 ram
80 and a 40gb 7200rpm hd
