I have a GA-7VT600-1394 motherboard. When I got the board, it had Bios rev.
F5 and everything worked seamlessly with no problems. About 3 months ago, I
flashed the bios to F7 to ensure large hard disk support and every since, at
every power up I get a bios error "Some bios settings have prevented the
system from booting, defaults have been loaded, F1 to continue, DEL for
Setup" and every time I go into the bios and do not change anything and save
+ exit and still at every power up I get the same error. I have reversed
back to bios F5, and tried F6 and back to F7 with no change. I have changed
from the Main bios to the Backup, re programmed both and still no change. I
have also taken all the memory out and tried them all one at a time and with
each stick I get the same error. I'm thinking it may be a memory issue
because I cannot run this ram at 400MHz without frequent system hangs,
crashes, memory cant be read errors and lockups so I keep the speed down to
333MHz. I also get the same crahses, etc @ 400MHz using one stick of this
ram at a time. I haven't tried any other memory as I don't have any to test
but I cant imagine that all 3 sticks are bad altho I have seen stranger
things. It boggles me that this didn't happen until I flashed the BIOS. I do
not overclock my system and no hardware other than a power supply upgrade
has been changed since the day I built the system. Once the system is on, it
will operate normally with the usual occasional lockups about once a month
or so depending on what I'm doing. Any information anyone could provide
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Check the setting for ACPI/APIC in the BIOS. If it has reverted to APIC
you won't be able to boot an OS installed under ACPI.

I combed the BIOS, only thing I found relating to ACPI is in power
management and its changable from S1 (POS) to S3 (STR). There is no function
to change from APIC to ACPI. Its currently set to S3.

Have you tried putting the old power supply back in?
I have a new pc with the same mobo and as yet failed to install my old
XP OS
I'm thinking of buying a new XP oem cd but I'm still not sure if there
isn't a
memory problem. The stick works ok in another pc.
My system:GA7-VT600 1394 F7
GIGABYTE NVIDIA 5200 FX
AMD Sempron 2400
Maxtor pata 40 GB
512 pc3200 no name
Arctic cooling T2 box 350W

I haven't tried that, but it did the same thing before I changed PSUs. I did
see your post about your problem. I have 2 SATA drives and have installed
WinXP Pro on them many-o-times with out any problem. I never used the driver
from the CD-ROM, I downloaded the latest version from the gigabyte website
before i installed and its always worked. I've never used a PATA hard disk
in this system so I dunno about that. Have you tried installing winxp to
both SATA and PATA or just PATA?

Ok just saw your post. if you cant install both, could be a mem problem.
thats an odd one. have you tried another stick of ram? or perhaps another
cpu temporarily?

How did you manage that? the SATA driver on the website is nearly 6Mb!
I say this because my initial set up included a Maxtor 160Gb SATA drive
and I
thought it might be a driver problem. I found no way of loading the
drivers
apart from making a floppy disk for the SATA drive from the cd rom.
I thought I'd remove the complication by sticking with a PATA drive

Maybe the F7 bios update is complete ********!

Normally, it would have defaulted to APIC which allows the OS to use more

Thanks again, loaded the standard defaults, same error, went in and manually
set all my mem timings to the slowest, 3.0CAS, CL CMD, etc. with the same
error. Then I tried the specs the ram calls for and still got the same
error, however, with the manual settings for the ram specs the ram now runs
good at 400MHz it seems.

Yep, the entire download is 5.89MB according to their site, but the part of
the driver you need will fit to a floppy for a windows installation. You can
always install the SATA tools etc later. When I downloaded the driver I
extracted it to another pc and opened the"DriverDisk" folder. Go into the
DriverDisk folder and copy its contents to the A:\ drive (TXTSETUP.OEM and
VT6420 need to be in the ROOT directory of the floppy disk). Begin your
installation of WinXP and when it says press F6 to select additional mass
storage controller (or something similar to that) do so and it should come
right up on the screen once it reads the floppy. try this and post back,
hope it helps. This is what I do every time I re install windows on my
system and I always re download the file to make sure I have the latest
driver. but thats just me. good luck.

Thanks for all your help, I have found out from Gigabyte that the
7VT600-1394 does not support Registered ECC memory of any type. Only
unbuffered can be used so that must be my problem. Anyway, thanks again.
