what you pc hardware maniacs think about projects such as BOINC http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ where you can support science with a power of your computer?
some of research:
- Climateprediction.net and BBC Climate Change Experiment: study climate change.
- Einstein@home: search for gravitational signals emitted by pulsars.
- LHC@home: improve the design of the CERN LHC particle accelerator
- Predictor@home: investigate protein-related diseases.
- Rosetta@home: help researchers develop cures for human diseases.
- SETI@home: Look for radio evidence of extraterrestrial life.
- SIMAP: calculate protein similarity data for use by many biological research projects.
- SZTAKI Desktop Grid: search for generalized binary number systems..
- World Community Grid: advance our knowledge of human disease
- Cell Computing biomedical research
It's easy to participate in a BOINC project. Download http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php and install BOINC. You will be asked to enter the project's URL, your email address, and a password.
But I don't think the majority of females would find that an attractive hobby for a guy. I also don't think I would want anyone finding out that I'm trying to help find ET. Also, the US Gov't is building a giant ass telescope in Mexico for $120 million dollars or something insane like that. It can catch millimeter radio waves. I'll leave it to them.
And I like women.
But hey, work on SETI for me and take one for the team.
Someone should start an organization that contracts with corporations and has them fold on all there systems. I bet it would make a huge difference if you had all those corporate machines donating their extra clock cycles. Not to mention the good PR that would go along with it.
"Microsoft finally doing something to help society."
"Enron may be stealing money, but they're also saving your life!"
SETI.USA is in a competition with P3DN in Spinhenge. P3DN is not crunching or downloading many Folding@Home WUs because of this. Now would be a good time for THG to grab all of the WUs you can and make up a lot of ground on P3DN.
