SP2 doesn't like ATI Radeon 9200

Greetings

Updated five pcs to SP2, they don't let me see the monitor, it freezes just
before logon....the same happened since
installation so that I was wondering why I wasn't able to complete
installation of the OS... while It simply freezed, in fact booting in VGA
mode I appreciated how Windows XP SP2 was correctly installed..
No doubts it depends on the ATI Radeon 9200:
1) in VGA mode everything works fine
2) it's the only component common to all pcs

Downloaded latest catalyst drivers (4.10) and attempted several times,
obatained no results.
Did anyone experienced the same?
Found any solution?

Suggest going back to SP1, removing all ATI software and drivers (then you
will be using the native drivers for your video card from WinXP), upgrade
to SP2, then install latest ATI drivers and software (in vgamode).

Use add/remove programs to remove ATI components and drivers (safemode),
edit registry to get rid of all ATI related entries in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Edit
registry in safemode as well and BACKUP registry first!

You can also use the following ATI utility (Catalyst Uninstaller) to remove
ATI components/software:
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html

And the following utility to create and send a report to ATI tech support:
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/atiadapterutil.html

Hi Yanez,
I had the same difficulty. I am not sure how I fixed it exactly but here are
some of the steps I took.

1. Upgrade the bios
2. Run Spybot and Ad-aware to eliminate spyware
3. Upgrade to the latest ATI graphics driver. You may find that you are
better off burning this driver to a CD on another PC and then installing
from that.
4. Run the SP2 upgrade from the CD that comes from recent PC mags.

I would suspect that part of the problem is from having an Intel 4 HT chip
though you havenot mentioned this. The other part is due to spyware and an
outdated graphics driver interfering with the download.

Good luck! Its hard work. I know.

You may also want to do a full checkdisk on your harddrive (including empty
spaces) especially if you have had to reload the software on your PC after
the failed installation.

Hmmm... I don't think it's a matter of hardware, nor spyware, since the pcs
are AMD platform based and the hdds are brand new..

Yeah!!
I finally succeeded!!!
If you have VIA chipset maybe the problem depends on the AGP VIA
drivers, and VIA too recomends to use Windows AGP drivers.
Anyway that is how I've done.

1- Installed WinXP SP2 (not updated)
2- At last automatic reboot I got black screen: that's ok, I espected
that
3- Rebooted in safe mode: installed VIA chipest drivers, EXCLUDING AGP
drivers; reboot in safe mode
4- Installed audio drivers (most important!!!) and rebooted in safe
mode
5- Installed all other devices lacking proper drivers, rebooted in VGA
mode
6- Finally, installed ATI's catalyst 4.10 and rebooted normally
7- Finish. At this point I experienced on two pcs out of five blank
screen again, but it depends on drivers testing the environment: so
don't worry leave it doing its work and force reboot with reset some
minutes later.

NOTE
I had attempted uninstalling VIA AGP drivers, catalyst etc etc... NO,
doesn't work... only this clean and tidy installation achieves its aim

Is the end result stay away from VIA?!? Talk about a lot of messing around.
