How well would this PC run MAME?

I've got an old 500Mhz Athlon with 256MB ram that I would like to use in my
cab. Right now I've got an Athlon 2500 with 512mb ram that is overkill for
MAME in the cabinet, and I'd like to put it to use elsewhere.

Should be fine for a good % of the game list.

the Mappy Mame cab is a Celeron 350Mhz with 64Megs 66Mhz ram and it runs
all the old classics just fine. Guwange has a slight slowdown and
choppiness. THis is with DOS and Advance Mame. Galaga '88 is way too
choppy to tollerate, but I've heard this has something to do with the
chip set on the PCB.

I Can run a decent swag of games on a celeron 500 laptop with
64MB RAM. You should be fine.

What if we are talking lower megahertz, but same RAM -- say 133 MHz Intel?
Or is that just wishful thinking? This machine I have ran DOS and Win95
fine. Win98 was okay on it, but it couldn't do much more than that. The
video card is 16 M of vram.

I was thinking of trying to run the DOS version of MAME on it, but I wonder
if that is a waste of time.

Thanks,
John

hehehe. I have a friend of mine running MAME on a 166MMX. He is making
up his own frontend which is going to use catver.ini to choose which
version of mame to run each ROM with. He should be done some time next
year.....<GBEG>

John Leveille's last words before the Sword of Azrial plunged through his

MAME relies primarily on CPU, and not as much on RAM (Some, just to get
the stuff loaded for the most part, and a little once its going). It
basically doesnt require much of a video card either (Screen effects, if
you use them, and that depends on what version of MAME you use too), as
long as it can keep in sync with the refresh rate.

no idea about MAME but it would be perfect for Raine (supports 535
games)
