XP Pro, Asus V9570 TD GCard and NEC 2010x LCD

Hi there,

MB Asus P4C800-E
Graphics card Asus V9570TD
NEC LCD 2010x
OS XP Pro SP2


I connect the NEC via DVI from the graphics card however not sure if this is
an OS or hardware problem I suspect hardware.

The problem is that when I turn on my computer sometimes not every time but
most times the screen comes on for about 3 seconds to where the BIOS is
reading the raid array and then goes blank (black) then when the OS gets to
the login screen the screen comes back to life.

During the black, blank screen time the power light on the NEC LCD can
sometimes be green and sometimes is amber. Now this has only just started a
few weeks ago and I have done a format and clean install of the OS so I
don't think it is that, I am using the latest Asus V9570TD drivers but that
doesn't seem to have stopped the problem.

Anyone any ideas?

If this problem is occuring before Windows even loads, it is definetly
not the drivers or anything software related. My guess would be your
BIOS settings. Check and make sure you have AGP set as the first video
source, and make sure there are no weird options enabled.

2) You haven't described a problem as far as I can see. What is it that you
want corrected, and why?

Hi there,

This is Tim the problem is that my LCD always used to switch on and the BIOS
start up information was always visible now some times this is not the case
i.e. when I switch the computer and screen on all I will get is a blank
screen until I get to the Windows XP login box. That did not used to happen
and no I have not updated my BIOS and yes sometimes when this occurs the
green power light on the screen is on but still with a blank screen and
occasionally the amber light is on so before I have NEC swap out the LCD I
need to check if there could be any other reason for this odd behaviour?

1) What have you done with Ann?

2) You *still* haven't described a problem, as far as I can see. It's not
unusual during the boot process for the light to go from amber (no video
signal present) to green (video signal present). Is there a significant
delay you haven't told us about? Why does this concern you to the point that
you're ready to return the monitor? What makes you think the monitor is at
fault (if indeed there is a problem)?

Hi there,

She's still alive and well.

It concerns me because it hasn't done this before neither do any of our
other NEC monitors so I'm thinking there is a problem.

Also spoke to NEC who also say that the blank screen with green or amber
light is not normal but I need to check that something else isn't causing
this behaviour. So will swap the graphics card on this computer over the
weekend and see if it that, that is causing the problem.

I'm still not convinced that there's actually a problem, but since you
apparently have access to other computers and similar monitors, have you
tried swapping in order to isolate the phenomenon to either the monitor or
the graphics hardware? I mean putting the monitor on a different computer
and/or putting a similar NEC monitor on the "problem" computer. No sense
actually switching cards if you don't have to.

So you make fun of me for "not knowing what I am talking about" and yet
you can't even figure out what the problem is here?

He clearly said that it used to show the entire POST and the Windows
logo during the loading, but it no longer shows this and sometimes will
show part of the POST and other times not. Sometimes it will all work
fine, but most of the time not. Now how in the world do you expect
someone to be able to access the BIOS if they can't see the POST and
most likely the video won't show in the BIOS either?

That is not normal, and that IS a problem. At least you offered a good
suggestion by recommending trying a different monitor to figure out if
it is the monitor or the video card.

Since your hostility seems to be related to a misunderstanding of a post in
another thread, I will cut you some slack here. There's nothing in any of
this that suggests that the BIOS is inaccessible. On one of my home
computers, there's *never* any POST verbosity of any kind, but I can still
access the BIOS if I need to. I don't argue that something *different* is
happening, but there's no evidence in any of this that there is a "problem"
unless the OP is too stupid to be able to enter BIOS setup without being hit
over the head with a prompt. There is also no basis for your contention that
"...most likely the video won't show in the BIOS either." We don't know for
sure when the video signal is being dropped. As I said to the OP, it's not
uncommon for the amber-green-amber-green thing to happen during POST. There
*might* be a problem, but who knows?
