modem won't connect

i recently upgraded to winxp...it has lucent winmodem. problem:it dials, then
you can hear the modem communicating, and then it automatically disconnects
and redials without ever making a connection. i have updated the driver,
uninstalled and reinstalled, tried different settings, nothing works. the
modem worked fine before the upgrade. i tried installing a different modem,
couldn't even detect dial tone with that one, yet both modems work fine when
tested in different computers. what do i do?

Replace the modem with a controller based variety (internal or external).

You have something misconfigured somewhere. Hell those LT's work
anywhere on almost anything.

Try using the Wizard and go through the whole procedure for setting up a
connection using a modem. You might want to use device manager to remove
the modem first.
