For some reason, when I join a game on battle.net (starcraft) my cable severely lags. I can create a game with no problems, but not join one.... how the heck can that be possible? I have turned off all firewalls with no success. I also went into the administration services and toyed with those (maybe not the right ones though) with no success. Can anyone think of anything I can try to join a game with no lag?

Try hosting a game. Chances are you're joining a game in which the host has either a dial up line, an older computer (because starcraft really doesn't require much to play), etc.
If you host a game, you'll notice a lot better game experience. You have to play other people with decent computers and a good connection.
I used to play my brother in games on our local LAN and I'd always lag because his computer was so slow to process, since he hosted.
My buddy is still playing starcraft on a PIII 600mhz with 256 or 512mb of ram and a Elsa Gladiac video card.
