There are two basic types of backup: file-based, and image. An image backup
is a backup of every sector that is allocated; think of it as a low-level
backup which is (or can be) done without looking at the filesystem's data.
A file-based backup is done one file at a time, and can select some files.

if you can afford research on Comuter Associates ArcServ BackUp
it gives you everything under a single console
