hey,
i currently have a ga-8ipe1000 pro2 (F9 bios) (no raid) with 2 hard disks
(seagate) taking up one of the ide controllers, and 2 dvd-roms taking up the
other ide controller.
yesterday i got a sata drive (seagate 200gig) and put it in the sata slot on
the motherboard.
the drive works well, but whenever i load windows (xp sp1) it finds new
hardware and tries to install an 'ide controller' and can never install it
properly.
i hear windows is ment to have a 'generic sata controller' that should work,
but what is the gigabyte sata controller that i should install? i have tried
the "Silicon Image SiI 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver" that come on the
gigabyte installation cd that comes with the motherboard, but it cant find
anything...
ive tried xp sp2, but the same thing happens...
i dunno... sorry if im a bit vague with a few things...

I recently built a PC with a very similiar configuration (with the exception
of DVD burners where your DVD-ROMs are) and saw no trouble.
XP with SP2 slipstreamed, didn't use any of the drivers supplied with mobo;
downloaded the latest version of the network driver from the website.
Suitably vague for you? ;o)

yeh, it has me baffeled... when ever i load windows it says "found new
hardware: IDE channel" in the little speech bubble... then it will come up
with a found new hardware dialog box say say "Cannot Install this
Hardware"...
i might just re-install windows... im due for one anyhow...
btw, the disk is just for extra hard disk space, it doesn't have windows on
it or anything...

I know what's the matter!
I had the same problems, it nags you over and over again with every
restart, right?
you have to reinstall windows with plugged in S-ATA drive.
S-ATA is installed dynamically, means no drive, no SATA controller in
the device manager.
you just have to plug in the sata drive prior installing windows and
then install intel chipset drivers optionally.
