I have an HP 6250 Scanjet that worked fine then after something happened and
the scanner is no longer recognized by any program or microsoft's paint
program that comes with XP. The driver is the default driver setup by XP and
when I go into the Device Manager and run the diagnostics on the scanner it
works just fine; It's just that no program recognizes that there is a
scanner. The driver listed as "Hewlett-Packard 6200 C #3" indicates that
this is the third driver for the scanner. However there are no other drivers
listed or installed. It should not have the #3 after the name of the driver.
I'm not sure if this is a problem but all my scanner programs state that
there is "no scanner" attached to the computer. The scanner is attached by a
USB 2.0 Port and I have connected it to several ports with no change. When
I delete the driver and reboot the machine XP recognizes the scanner and
automatically installs the driver always as #3. Any Ideas on how to
eliminate an phanthom drivers or how to fix the problem?

In Device Manager, View, Show Hidden, Then remove all instances and
reinstall.
