What's the best way to run WinXP and Linus on different partitions on a
laptop?

It is possible to run WinXP using NTFS in combination with Linux?

If you want to use Linux, you need to learn to use Google. Yes, it is
completely possible to dual-boot XP/Linux. Yes, it is possible to run
Linux on a laptop. Make sure you investigate if your hardware is
compatible. You would do this, btw, for *any* operating system you
wanted to install, not just Linux.

Google for "dual boot XP Linux" and get about 405,000 links.
Google for "Linux on laptops" and get over 3 million links, with the
first few being the most useful ones.

I see you got the usually Linux style reply of RTFM!

I have sucesfully dual booted Mandrake and XP. When you install Mandrake it
will rewrite the MBR and install it's own with a menu giving access to Liux
and Windows XP!

Actually, I gave him a very straightforward answer. You may have taken
my answer to be flip or sarcastic, but I assure you that if the OP
doesn't make the effort to do some research - and Google is the best
place to start - he will not be successful in learning how to run a new
operating system. The need to do this is not exclusive to Linux.

I have a guide on dual booting windows xp and slackware linux 'here'

THe guide was also carried out on a laptop so it could be helpful :)

I do not know about all variants of Linux but Gentoo will not run on
NTFS. I made a FAT32 partition. They work well together.

Really very simple. Try to create unallocated space on the HD first before
putting in the Linux CD. This unallocated space would typically be
distributed for the Linux main partition and the Swap Partition. If you're
planning on installing Suse or Mandrake, the installation would typically
create these automatically and optimally. Just pop in the Linux CD and boot
from it. The installation is generally easy depending on the distro you
pick. If this is your first time, try Suse, RedHat or Mandrake, or some
other good GUI based one.

Yes. But only some distros can READ the NTFS partition. Suse 9.1 can read
it.
