When I look this up I usually get only a reference to an HP part
number, I have a spare 64mb PC-100 CAS2 SODIMM from a notebook that
looks physically similar to the images of the HP part - can I use that
in the Laserjet 1200 (with only base ram of 8mb) to expand it?

Probably not. Your PC100 memory board is surely 168 pins.

The HP 1200 wants 100 pin SDRAM, according to
