Hi,
The fan on my 8KNXP DPS board has begun to fail - anyone know if it's
possible to get a replacement from Gigabyte? (Board is out of warranty)

I'm in the UK.

Is it a standard fan I can pick up elsewhere?

Out of warranty could be an issue, if you Google you'll find posts here
about a website in the US who sold these fans.

IIRC unless you want the glow in the dark look, it's just a 40mm 12v
fan like you used to find on the baby CPU heatsinks a couple of years
back.

BTW, you don't even need the DPS module at all, I'm not really that
sure what the idea is. I removed mine to make room for my zalman CPU
heatsink over a year ago, and the machine's fine. It's running 24/7

Same here. Zalman Heatsink no DPS no problems

I also heard some people removed the DPS fan to allow clearance for
the Zalman, and just left the blast from the Zalman's big fan blow
over the DPS... I'm not sure how reliable this is however.

I thought about doing this, my gut feeling is there is enough forced air
from the Zalman to cool the DPS but I haven't tried it.

I've been running like this for over a year.
With the Zalman you can run without the DPS fan.
With a Northwood CPU you can run without the DPS completely.

I do not know if the DPS is needed with Prescott CPU's - it may be. But then
I am not too sure if the REV 1 mobo will run Prescotts at all.

It's a Prescott I'm using with no DPS, occasional stressing with Premiere
and sound forge, left running for days at a time and never had any
instability. Shouldn't have said that... :{)

Mine is a Rev 1 board, and yes I'm using a Zalman HSF and the Zalman will
interfere a bit with the DPS module fan.

In my case, I removed the small fan from the DPS and kept the DPS.

System runs 24/7 for about 1 1/2 years now with no problem. The Zalman
provides more than enough airflow to the DPS module.

BTW this is with a 3.2gig cpu and 2gig of ram.

Ta, not bothered about the glow in the dark look.

What exactly does the DPS do? I've taken it out and the PC is running fine
(On 24/7 for a week now).

Hi,

1) DPS allows Gigabyte's Marketing Department to claim another "super-
duper feature" for its boards.

2) It also adds a nifty blue LED fan to your case. That has to count
for something.

3) Other than (1) and (2), above, no one really knows. I'm not joking
-- take a look back in this newsgroup (and elsewhere on the web), and
you'll find that most people have observed very little change with the
DPS in or out. Gigabyte claims the following:

GIGABYTE Patented Technology – Dual Power System 2 (DPS 2)
Featuring new VRM 10.0 specification with that supply a total of 6 phase
power circuit design, delivers a high durable power design for the new
generation Intel® platform

(source:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/MotherB [...] _GA-8KNXP%
20Ultra.htm )

The manual suggests that it might make your system more stable when
overclocking. I have yet to see any concrete evidence to that effect.
(I did a couple of quick searches on the USPTO website, and couldn't
find the patent number -- if anyone does, I'd be interested in seeing
it.)

cheers,
Kris

<snipped>

Thanks. I'm leaving it out. Sounds like a waste of space, and I don't
overclock...

The manual is gibberish.

But aside from that, it's a great board and been working fine for 18 months
now!

I feel the same way. It's been 19 months on a Rev. 1 with no DPS2, and
total stability--and I'm wondering how much longer it can be so perfect.
This is too good to be true. (Knocking firmly on wood.)
