Odd & irritating problem with otherwise OK Ipaq 2210: neither the Ipaq image
viewer app nor the Pictures app (I assume this is part of Pocket PC 2003)
will see GIF files. JPGs are there OK, thumbnails visible & open fine. GIFs
can be seen in File Explorer (no thumbnails, obviously) but when tapped they
always open in Pocket Internet Explorer.

This is true for files in any location.

No options that I have found in any app or in the system that will change
this behaviour. I think I've looked at every damn menu for every app.

I've installed a few extra programs, (including nPop, Realplayer & latest
Windows Media Player, latest MSN Messenger, Acrobat reader& an SMS
programme) but nothing that I think is likely to have caused this.

I'm sure that Ipaq image viewer app and the Pictures app it *should* be able
to work with GIFs. Googled & trawled here but not found anyone else with the
same prob, nor can I find anywhere to alter file associations in the OS.

Advice/help welcome, thanks,

Evan

The answer to your question as to if the program _can_ open them is to
put one in the "My Documents" folder, start the program and use the
program (not file explorer) to find and open the image.

Every file viewer I have ever tried opens gifs.

once you determine that the program can open the file, your apparent
need is to "associate" gif files with your viewer.

Some viewers have this ability in their preferences or options, but
there are several "tweak" programs that do it as well including the one
I use from http://Tillanosoft.com

The reason that you may not be able to see the files you need in the
viewer is that the MS "standard" is that programs can only see files in
the "My Documents" folder or one level below it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

A GIF in My Documents behaved in exactly the same way - not visible to
either Ipaq Veiwer or Picture.

Tried the PocketTweak app as you suggested: no good, unfortunately, as
trying to associate GIFs with either of the other apps broke things entirely
and they couldn't be seen by anything. Reset it to Internet Explorer & back
to as it was.

Still puzzled - I'm sure the built-in apps should see GIFs.

Odd.

I have that problem too. Not found any solution as of yet.

question 1, is the gif static or animated?

Suggestion, shop for another viewer (there are many) and install one
that lists gifs as supported... google for IMAGE VIEWER POCKETPC and
after you have evaluated the results, click on google's "did you mean..."

Static. It was in fact an album cover downloaded by Windows Midia 9. I
can open it in Internet Explorer - I just wanted to use Pictues because
of its ability to set an image as the Today background, and edit the
transpancy settings.

Static in my case.

I've downloaded the trial version of the Resco viewer, which seems to work
fine & show GIFs properly. I guess I'll have to buy it, but everything I've
read suggests that the built-in apps should be able to see GIFs fine and I
don't really want to have to buy something as a substitute for something
that ought to work as-supplied.

So still seeking some sort of explanation or fix if there is one.

Thanks, though.

Just a thought - has GIF support been taken out because of the intellectual
property problem with the LZW compression algorithm? I have a feeling that
the Unisys patent on LZW has only just run out in Europe, although it
expired around a a year ago in the US..

Perhaps European Ipaqs therefore have had the GIF capability removed?
Although in that case, why is it still present in Pocket IE?

Probably wrong about this being relevant, though.

I missed the thread here, but surely Pocket IE has support for
browsing static (not animated) GIFs ?

You are right, of course, but with Pocket IE I can't zoom, rotate, use
full-screen view or see thumbnails of even static GIFs, all of which would
be very useful in managing GIFs on the Ipaq. Both the Ipaq viewer in the
Pictures app allow that with JPEGs, & I'm sure should with GIFs.
