WinXP, Virtual drive letter missing

My daughter just called me from out of town and said that her folders are
all empty in Outlook Express. She is missing all her incoming, sent mail.

She is sure that it was fine yesterday Dec 23,2004.

So I told her (she is using windows xp,) to use Restore to yesterday.

She tried that and it came up that it could not restore the Virtual F drive
because it was stopped from being on the Restore option.

So she Restore still to the 23rd of Dec. and still her Messages are gone.

I then asked her to try the 22nd and she did that with same result. It
always said it could not restore F drive but otherwise restored
successfully.

Yet - again her messages are not there.

I have 2 questions, Because I never had problems with Restore myself.
HOW can 1 drive be "stopped" from being on the Restore file? How can you
stop or "un-stop" it ? Where?

She did a Virus check with NOD32 and finds no viruses.
She did a Search and Destroy and finds no problems there.

What do you think happened? I am at this time clueless.

Why does she have a virtual drive? That could be the problem.

THAT is not the problem at all. I use personally for 10 years virtual
drives. C has the Operating System, D has Back up, E has Photos, F has all
my Programs.

That makes just sense with to-days big drives. NOT having virtual drives can
be a big problem when you have a Crash and ALL is on one and the same
partition.

Thos are not called virtual drives... they are called PARTITIONS. A
partition is a real portion of a drive that is assigned a new driver letter.
Virtual drives are another thing compleatly, they exist but
its not what you mean. If you want to know what a virtual crive is post here
and I will tell you.
Now, you must know that System Restore does not touch emails and documents
and it does this on purpose. So if she deleted the emails system restore is
not built to get them back.

Let me explain WHY emails and other documents are not affected by system
restore...

This is a scenario.. say you have been working for a week on a document, and
you have been
recieving important emails. THen your PC has a problem and you need to do a
system restore to a
point that was one week old. If system restore would change all the files
then all his work would be lost. And THAT is why system restore doesnt do
anything to your own files and emails.

IN order to change what partitions or drives are included in system restore
you must go to:
Right click on My computer> properties> System restore (tab)

there you will see a list of available drives or partitions, the ones that
say monitoring
are the ones that system restore has an eye on. Selecting the drive and
pressing the setting button you can change this by checking or unchecking
the box that says "turn off system restore for this drive".

Thanks Kenny, Always glad to learn something new.

But while you offer it, tell me about virtual drives.

But the rest was very informative too, what you said. Thanks.

A virtual drive can be a FOLDER on a compter that is assigned a letter, so
it will appear among the
other drives in My computer. There are software that do this, they are
free.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/vsubst.html

Or if you want a more pro solution there is (not free but powerfull)
http://www.farstone.com/home/ensite/products/virtualdrive.shtml

Also a virtual drive can be an ISO file from a cdrom mounted as a drive and
given a letter.
There is a free utility from microsoft that does this.

Microsoft has a Control Panel applet for mounting ISO images as a drive.
It's called "Virtual CD-ROM" for Windows XP.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe

Also my opinion is that you really dont need more that 2 partitions.
One for the OS and the programs, and a second one for all your data.
If you need to format and re-install you erase the first partition only
leaving your data intact.

another interesting software to make folders come up in the My Computer list
is this:
http://www.tropictech.de/software/shellobject/

also free.

Hope this information helps...

(you can find some nice freeware on my site www.computerboom.net)

You are great for quick response and wonderful references and hyperlinks.

Thanks. I shall explore them.

Even though I have separate partitions for OS, another for Programs, another
for Video, and a final one for Backups.

I addition I have 2 other physical harddrives in the system.

Have in mind this:

You can only do a real backup of your data if you backup from one drive to
another,
and NOT on 2 partitions of the same drive, because if a drive fails all the
partions
will not be accessible.
I have 2 HD, one 80 gb and another 200 gb, and they are partitioned into 2
parts each.
I have my os and programs on the first drive (80gb) that gets the most
beating (because the os and programs are there), and all my files on the
second.
I do backups of the important files on the second partition of the first
drive so at any time
I have 2 copies of the crucial data on 2 seperate drives.

And another tip. Use a UPS always.... it saves the drives in case of a power
failure.
