Missing Network Adapter after Hibernate :'(

Hi. Yesterday (chistmas day of all days!!!) I put my laptop into
hibernate, and then resumed it. Upon resuming I noticed a prolonged
black screen (maybe a minute of so) before the password box appeared
for me to resume the session. After doing this my wired network
connnection dissappeared completely along with the adapter. Only thing
I'd done differently was having my wireless network also enabled when
going into hibernate (built in adapter usually turned off and just got
a wireless network at home so was on - have done this before i think at
other ppls houses tho).

Anyway now I can't plug my laptop back into the wired network at home,
and more importantly to the network when I go back to uni. I've done a
lot of googling, which mentioned this problem with win2k and said that
I needed to upgrade to a new service pack but I'm on winxp home so I
tried a reinstall of sp2 but to no avail. Also found out how to show
hidden devices in the device manager, and here I found a single entry
related to my NIC (SiS 900-based PCI Fast Etherenet Adapter - Packet
Scheduler Miniport), which I tried to uninstall but was told I
couldn't.

Anyone have any ideas at all about this problem? I've spent far to long
trying to solve it, and its really anoying me. especially as I only
just did a complete reinstall of windows about a week ago!
Thanks very much for your time.

OK to add more to this problem, I've just performed a complete format
and reinstall of XP home and the adapter is still missing! I had a look
in the BIOS to see if i could turn it on, however there isn't any
options in my BIOS to enable/disable system components.

Yes I've run the restore CD and the drivers and utility CD. the driver
CD didn't even identify that I have a network card other than my
wireless one, which it installed the software for with no problems. I
think I'm going to have to phone up the manufacturer on this one,
because it seems to be a bit deeper than a driver issue.

Not all network cards are happy with hibernation...

The netcard could got fried by electric surge or just for whatever reason.
This happens.
Try to open the laptop and re-seat the NIC (it probably is a mini-pci card).
Or, visit a service center.
