Added another 512mb of Corsair XMS-3200( total now 1 gig of ram)... to my Abit IT 7 motherboard, along with upgrade to a 2.8ghz cpu from the 1.8 I had (Northwood, sockett 478)...also have new BFG nVidia 6800GT(256ram) video card...( with latest driver)...

Now, MS Links 2003 golf game at startup kicks back to the desktop with the following error:

"the instruction at 0x02888b20 referenced memory at 0x02888b20 . The memory could not be read."

Tried changing desktop to 800x600, rather than 1600x1200. Also turned off sound acceleration. No luck...

Anyone help me? Thx... Brian

I pretend to give a [-peep-] because I care.

Try taking out the new RAM, see if that helps. Could be a bad stick. Also, you could try memtest86.

Sparky... thx for reply// I'm afraid of memtest86...think it's too complicated for me to handle!! :(

Since I posted an hour ago, I just flashed my motherboard Bios to the latest... first time I did that... YIKES, was I nervous :)
Seems ok...

Think I'll move the sticks of memory around and see what happens...want to play Links game...

Memtest is easier then flashing your BIOS. just make a bootable floppy as per the instructions, and reboot with the floppy in the drive and your BIOS set to boot from floppy. It does the rest.

If your still not sure, try running with just one stick at a time, see if it helps. If you have a problem with one stick, then the RAM is likely bad.

What about your PSU? What brand/wattage is it? IIRC, the new nVidia cards are pretty power hungry, and you want a good quality PSU, say 400W or more.

OK, so its not likely RAM or PSU. What about a driver issue?

What was your old video card? Was it ATI or nVidia? If it was ATI, did you use any kind of driver cleaner program to delete the old drivers before installing the new card?

Also, have you tried re-installing Links? Could be an issue between the game and the drivers, and if you reinstall both, it may fix the problem.

Other than that, I'm not sure what could be happening.

Just run memtest. It's easy.. you can't mess it up. Download it.. then it'll extract to a floppy.. Reboot, and it starts up by itself if I remember. Leave it on overnight. If there's ANY errors, your ram is bad.
