Discussed the issue with a GigaByte tech for a few hours.
Turns out IDE 1 is faulty.
Diagnostics:
Loaded GigaRAID from a bootable floppy created on sister system.
Installed W2k on new HD and as well as GigaByte drivers.
Works like a charm on IDE 3
Switched loaded HD to IDE 1 - nothing - hangs on "Verifying DMI Pool Data
......."
