I am getting an error when I try to install a printer on my computer. It
says:
There was a problem installing this hardware:
<PRINTER NAME HERE>
An error occurred during the installation of the device
The data is invalid.
I have tried everything I have found on the internet, including copying
the DRIVER.CAB file from my CD to its proper location, and changing the
permissions on the PCI keys in the registry.

Maybe you could tell us the make and model of the printer.

Generally the standard practice with the installation of printers today is:
1. Install software
2. Connect printer as and when requested by the installation process
If you didn't follow these steps, uninstall any software via Control Panel /
Add Remove Programs. Remove any printers using Printers and Faxes then click
on the printer and click on 'Delete this printer'. Then restart the pC and
install the software.

This is a good idea, but when I try to install the software from my CD,
it says it is incompatible with this operating system. I cannot find
newer software on the HP site.

The 722c has drivers in XP already, so the problem may be caused by
improper port setting. Does the lpt port work properly, is the Print
spooler service running?

Hi,
Download the drivers via the internet. Place them within a folder under C:.
Once done, extract them, then go to the Device Manager and use the Driver
tab, update driver and point the way.

You go to www.hp.com and from there look for Support - download drivers,
etc. There will be a place for you to type in your particular printer
and model; e.g., "deskjet whatever".

HP printers are difficult if the original install is not done properly. HP
has an uninstall program that you will need to run to completely remove the
originally installed drivers then you can do the installation again. Be sure
to follow the install directions to the letter on the install screens this
time. They are really fussy as to whether or not the printer is plugged in
before the install. READ CAREFULLY!

If you didn't find and run the hp-uninstall program that is in the utilities
folder on the HP Install CD, you didn't really get all the drivers and files
removed. They won't come out with a simple uninstall neither from the add
and remove programs, or from the uninstall file that is in the HP program
folder.
Find the removal utility on the HP CD and use it.
Only way I've found............

Go into the Device Manager and Uninstall ALL your USB devices.
Reboot. XP should now find and reinstall the USB ports.
Download a new set of drivers from the HP website at www.hp.com.
Install the software. Do NOT reconnect the printer to the PC until the
software tells you to do so.
