Svchost using 431,836k on new I5/Win 7 Pro?

Hi, I'm new to Win7. Always worked with XP Pro.

svchost is showing 431,944k in the taskbar and I'm getting error messages.

I installed AVG and had problems updating so wanted to uninstall it. It's taking ages to uninstall and getting error messages as well.

Is ControlDeck.exe a game on the Win7? I'm getting a message that 'application has generated an exception that could not be handled. - ok to terminate?' which I've said yes.

Looking at taskbar: CPU Usage 100%, Physical Memory 61%

How can I get this system back on track?

BTW This is a brand laptop.

Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Hello and Welcome to Tom's!
ControlDeck.exe is Asus Configuration Utilty that came with your pc.
Personally i would probably re-install the O/S
And i would use MSE as my AntiVirus because it's flawlessly integrated with Windows Update and your O/S.
And your other info leads me to believe you already have a virus.
Short of a re-install
Boot into Safemode/Network enabled
Download Malwarebytes and update it
Run a full scan
Post back with results

Hi, and thanks Davcon.

I thought the same as you about a virus already being there.

I ended svchost process in task manager. Once I did that the uninstall continued seamlessly.
I have Trend Micro's Internet Security Suite loaded on the computer with a free trial so I'm using that for the moment - is that one OK? Is MSE Microsoft's Antivirus? Have never used it.

Have run a full scan and there are no threats.

Restarted computer and svchost is at 172,236kb with a windows popup saying 'svchost has stopped working'

What is svchost? Is it important?

I don't particularly want to reinstall the o/s if I can help it - will be a last resort!

Cheers

Update:

Once I downloaded Malwarebytes and did a scan, it picked up a virus in svchost - so thanks for your suggestion.

Haven't had to reinstall the o/s.
