I bought an Officejet d145 at a firesale. It had been used lightly,
then left to sit for a long time. When I powered it on, it said the
black ink supply had expired. (Not empty). I replaced the black ink,
and also the color, as I thought it might need to be replaced also. I
then printed out a self-test page, and it said the status was ok, but
the magenta didn't print, and the black was patchy. I ran a head
cleaning cycle, and got the IDS Failure message. The self-test report
shows 'IDS Failure Call HP' under each color, though the yellow, cyan
and black do print.
After contacting HP, they suggested I remove the heads and clean the
contacts. I tried that, and reset the printer, still get the error. I
then went to a HP chat room, and was told how to hold the # and 7 keys
while inserting the power cord, to get the IDS Priming message. Now,
the black is perfect, no lines or anything, but no Magenta, and still
the error.
Tried calling tech support, but it seems it has been moved to India,
and I didn't get much support....
I have already put more money into this printer than I expected. I
find that the printheads cost $40 each. If I can get this to a working
condition by replacing just the Magenta printhead, I'll do that, and
be happy. But, the self-test report says IDS Failure under each color.
I don't have any experience with this model... Is this normal
behavior?
I know that the printer hasn't printed the 2000-5000 pages I find
quoted as the lifespan for the heads, but I know that leaving an
inkjet printer to sit for months without printing is not good for the
heads.
Any educated advice? Can this be caused by anything other than the
magenta printhead needing replacing?
