Worse than how long ago?

They've been getting worse for years.

Or maybe you're maturing and that stuff that seemed so 1337 a couple years ago isn't...

Mike.

I miss the old National Lampoon movies, and Naked Gun

those comedies are the best! you can watch them 50 times and always see something new, they have SO much stuff goin on in the background!

Can't find that anymore

Reply to CHEEZball

I mean look at dramas and sitcoms not so funny anymore and look at the crap that hollywood now makes

Reply to dvdpiddy

Compared to the crap they made 10 yrs ago, it's about the same.

Compared to the crap they made 20 yrs ago, its slightly worse.

Compared to the crap they made 30 yrs ago...

(you didn't answer my question, dude.)

Mike.

Reply to fishmahn

ok dude i meant the shows now look at snl it sucks now but 10 years ago they rocked same with madtv was good at start and now they are'nt that funny and what cheez said i do miss movies like naked gun they are like monty pythons old sketches ever see them they are funny to this day remember the farting mailman and the blind kung-fu master?

Reply to dvdpiddy

cheez do you remember the first pink panther it sucked but the sequel was so much better and the remake is better this time around!

Reply to dvdpiddy

Ok, then my above post stands...

I thought SNL sucked 10 yrs ago. Apparently it still does. 20 yrs ago (or however long ago) it was better. Was never to enthused with Mad TV either.

I watched many of Monty Python's 'old sketches' when they were pretty new. (well, new in the US...)

Mike.

edit: finish my comment about SNL 20 yrs ago.. :)

Reply to fishmahn

ok man and look at the movies now how come there are no more good action movies now look at the 80's every month brand new action movie but now its all poorly written crap

Reply to dvdpiddy

q.v.

Most of those from the 80's weren't all that great either... But it was a new genre so it got the benefit of the doubt.

Mike.

Reply to Flakes

thx loftus and flakes the movies out now are poorly written and badly produced! i think that 10% of all movies and tv shows are good and the rest suck

Reply to dvdpiddy

I'm pretty sure it was always like that: the 80's and 90's had any number of horrible, horrible shows!

It's just that we tend to remember the god over the crap that no one watched anyway.

Reply to Snorkius

ok guys gotta go right now be back at 8 or 1 and a half hours from now

Reply to dvdpiddy

yes i agree snorkius movies were good in the 80's but tv sucked and prozac scarface was the best movie ever made i dont care what any critic says they can say its too violent its offensive blah blah blah they can go and f them selves

Reply to dvdpiddy

scarface was a pretty good movie,

classic movie about the american dream. :trophy:

Reply to mrface

lol phuky be back soon

Reply to dvdpiddy

Movies specifically started getting worse when Spielberg figured out all movies should have a happy ending otherwise they won't sell. After that, I guess exploration of anything serious started to go downhill.

Reply to steve_sa

Movies have always been hit or miss-- mostly miss, especially with so many remakes. . .

TV, I'm not so sure there are not good sitcoms (I only watch "The Office" ). Dramas? There's some good ones:

Stargate series (Atlantis and SG-1)
Battlestar Galactica (although not as good recently)
24
House
Prison Break
Lost
Desperate Housewives
Greys Anatomy
Doctor Who (the new one)
Numb3rs

As far as "reality" shows go:
American Idol (#1)
The Apprentice
Mythbusters (duh!)
Dirty Jobs
MXC

And, if nothing else is on:
Discovery Wings Channel
Food Network

Reply to dwellman

In Hollywood, maybe.

Though I must say, I like happy endings: there is enough misery to fill a lifetime in just one evening's newscast.

Reply to Snorkius

speilberg pisses me off i hate him after what he did

Reply to dvdpiddy

I wish you would have worded your post differently... like

Which do you think is getting worse?
Television
Movies
Neither

I personally think movies are getting worse. MPAA likes to blame box office sales on pirating, but polls consistently show that people think the quality of movies is going down. No wonder ppl don't go to the movies anymore.... they'll just wait for DVD.

On the other hand, I think TV has progressively gotten better. For a while TV was stuck in the reality crap (and it still is kinda). But now we have great serials like Lost, 24, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, and a couple decent sitcoms like King of Queens (my favorite), 2 and a Half men, and... that's it for sitcoms i think. lol. Family guy is back and American Dad is god damned funny. The simpsons still suck though. But seriously, shows like House and 24 continue to raise the bar in drama. On the sci-fi side of things, Battlestar Galactica and Stargate continue raising the bar. So does Dr. Who.

I have so many great shows to watch during the week (on network) that I have to pick and choose. With all the CSI's, Law and Orders, House, 24, Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Desperate Housewives... ugh! I can't choose sometimes.

It's just a sign of you guys getting older. The music isn't as it used to be, the movies aren't, the tv shows aren't. And even objectively, indeed music has changed as have tv shows and films. They're different to what you have been growing up with, and they will continue to change. As flexible as some minds are, it is a statistical human characteristic that your mind will become less and less flexible over time. Some people will always be open to the sign of the times, but the majority will one day start to complain that things used to be better, regardless of what these things are.

This is not to say that everything is changing for the better either, by any standard that can be measured objectively.

Greatest film ever made? The Shawshank Redemption.

As for TV, I'm with Jesse. For so long, it was just dross that was churned out. Now, you've got so many shows that challenge you, enthrall you. 24 raised the bar for everyone, and is still must-see television. Seinfeld is a show I can watch and watch watch and still laugh my ass off every time.

Reply to RobD

The Shawshank Redemption, is a good movie. Withnail and I still gets my vote. 24, isn't that the show that does a whole day in real time by showing 24 45 min episodes? That challenged me, still stuck on that one.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Withnail and I. :trophy: I haven't seen that in ages, forgotten about that. What a fcuking classic.

You're spot on with 24. The BBC acquired the first 2 series' from the US, and because they chopped the ads, it was 45 minutes long. The only TV company in the world who had the potential to blow a hole in the format promptly did so.

For the British audience, in regard to comedy, anyone remember The Mary Whitehouse Experience? Now there was a show.

Reply to RobD

The Mary Whitehouse Experience? Radio or TV? I remember as a teen The Young Ones, that was really good back then. Watched an episode of it recently on BBC 3 or 4, still made me laugh.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Well, both. Back in the days when Radio 1 was half decent, they played something like 100+ shows. Prime time Saturday night too. They've never repeated the TV either, too topical apparantly.

The Young Ones is still class, especially the University Challenege episode. In fact, every single one is classic,

Reply to RobD

Did you see ant of that Red Dwarf wanna be, Hyperdrive? You just can't emulate class like Red Dwarf, admittedly it had the odd moment though.

Reply to Tom_Smart

I saw some of it, it wasn't bad, but Red Dwarf won't be bettered. I refuse to watch anything from Series 7 onwards, it lost the plot completely then. Pity.

Reply to RobD

I am kinda hoping that we are on an upswing... Look at the old comedy movies that rocked... Chevy Chase, Belushi, Akroid, etc.... A group of guys that come together and make a bunch of movies, many are good, a few are crap...

That seems to be happening again with Will Ferrel, Vince Vaughn, Owen & Luke Wilson, Steve Carrell, etc... They are putting out a bunch of movies that are at least decent... Maybe not all great, but usually not crap.

As far as TV goes, I think there are a TON of great shows on again... To paraphrase what has already been said, I look forward to likely one or two shows each night... (I don't get to watch them too often, and I don't feel like researching too much, only 10 minutes left on lunch)

Monday - 24
Tuesday - Mythbusters / Dirty Jobs
Wednesday - I don't remember
Thursday - The Office / My Name is Earl
Friday - I don't remember
Saturday & Sunday - Can always hope for a Mythbusters / Dirty Jobs Marathon, plus you have the block Sunday night of Simpson's, War At Home(?), Family Guy, and American Dad.

You got slapnutz from a wrestler? Hopefully a course of antibiotics will clear it up.

Television programming here in the United States in my opinion is off the moral scale. It's no wonder kids are so screwed up these days with the things that are exposed to on television. It was hard enough growing up in the fifties and sixties when television for the most part was wholesome. I can't imagine what it's like for young people today. Our youth is exposed to television shows that flaunt gay lifestyles as normal . Now what the heck do you think that's doing to these youngsters minds?

I can only begin to imagine the damage learning tolerance would do to a mind schooled only in homophobia. Why they might even grow up accepting other race, creed and religion as normal. God help us we're all doomed.[/different point of view]
