Currently I happily use my iPAQ 3970 with
Pocket PC 2002, but to facilitate use of one
particular program on both my 3970 and my 2210,
it would be more convenient to upgrade the
3970 to Pocket PC 2003.
When the 3970 upgrade to Pocket PC 2003 was
originally released there seemed to be quite
a few complaints. I note that there have been
no BIOS upgrades since. What is the consensus
about the upgrade now? Do it or not?

Hi Peter-
Using the upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 on my HP iPAQ 5450 left a great
impression on me. It was extremely well done and performs just as my iPAQ
5555 does (which natively has WM 2003).

I did on my 3970 mainly because I wanted the added functionality that came
with the changes in the way BT was handled, other then that it seems as
buggy and clutzy as '02.
As to installation, the entire process went suprisingly smoothly, I needed
to upgrade the driver for my keyboard and that was about it.

No backhander intended, it still seizes up with monotinious regularity,
needs soft resetting 3 - 5 times a day (on the days I do use it) and is
always cantankerous when attempting to sync with my desktop PC using W2K.
None of these "fatures" changed in '03 and seem endemic of the OS.

The PPC operation part sounds to me like some
added software--I found that the 3970 worked
so much better than the 3870 that on the 3970
whenever there are a series of seizures I just
dump whatever I'd most recently added. Latest
versions of software are mandatory.
With both 3870 and 3970 and syncing I learnt
never to leave the PPC in its cradle when
booting or shutting down, and to kill wcescomm
and restart Activesync before syncing twice in
any one session.
But the latest Activesync 3.7.1 seems better.

I like most things on my 3970 except the BT. It has a serious bug where
it can lock up the unit if you power off with BT in use. There was a fix
for the 5450 with the exact same bug but HP seems to refuse to provide
this fix for the 3970.
