Hi -
I'm still pretty much a newbie with MB replacement. I just upgraded a
machine using a MSI K7N2 ($75 at Frys) , Athlon 2400+ , and a single stick
of 256MB DDR333 (PC2700). All seems to be running fine and stable.
However, I am wondering if the memory timings are corret. At POST it
reports:
Memory Mode: Single Channel
Clock for DDR: 333
Is the "Single Channel" as its supposed to be. The "Dual Data Rate" of
"DDR" makes me think this might be not right. If its right, thats great -
any short explanation would be appreciated. If its wrong and should be "Du

Single Channel = 1 stick
Dual Channel = 2 sticks
If you look at the memory slots on the motherboard you'll see two that
are close together (Slots 1 & 2) and a third (Slot 3) that's set off a
little bit and (should be) a different color. Slot 1+3 & Slot 2+3 =
Dual Channel, (just)Slot 1 or 2 or 1+2, or 3 = Single Channel. The
memory bus in dual channel operates at 128 bit rather than 64 bit, while
this sounds impressive on the nForce2 motherboards real world results
are barely noticeable (+3-5%).
Buy another *identical* stick of memory and put it in the correct slot,
when you boot up it will say Dual Channel.

Yes, it is right. This MB can use "dual channel mode " for faster
memory access if you put two sticks (same size) into a Green and Purple
slot.
As you only have one stick, then it just runs in single channel mode which
is fine.

Thank you. Since this computer is not for any high end use - just internet
and office type applications - I think 256MB is all I need (which I have
with the one stick). I am assuming I would not see any greatly noticeable
speed increase for this type of usage. Is that a good assumption, or
should I spend the $50 for a second 256MB stick ? Thanks a lot for the
help.

A good indicator is whether, as you are working, is there a lot of disk
activity right after you execute a command or switch applications. The disk
activity at this point is Windows swapping data into/out of the pagefile.
By adding more RAM, the disk activity should go away - making that part
much, much faster.
But, if you never have this pagefile disk activity, adding more RAM won't
make any difference.
