With all the new peoples here, I'm wonderin' what y'all listen to.

I primarily listen to metal/Things That Rock, but not the loud senseless kind. I like complex music with a large range of instruments and structured melodies. Vocal aesthetics are a big plus. Acoustic guitar + good voice = happy in my pants.

Things like Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Blackmore`s Night, Dragonforce, Edguy etc. etc. etc. etc. The Classics of Rock I don't mention because everyone likes/knows those.

I'd offer to mail some samples, but Jake says that's wrong. (PM me  )

anything but country.

Reply to qoop

I'm not saying I like it, I'm rather indifferent...what's so bad about country? Some of the early songs are much better than some pop music. (Which does not make them all that great, but still)

I like how people say that they don't like country, yet rock n roll really is not that much different than country.

Reply to Forlorn

I mean hillbilly country...liek the country we have out here...in the country :P

I associate country with being car sick. It's hard to understand. I think it's the twang in the voice or the way they use slide guitar (unlike blues slide guitar)....I dunno, I just don't like it *shrug*

Reply to qoop

I'm listening to a song now with like 10000000 bpm. It rocks so hard, I think it's probably degrading my health.

anything that doesnt suck  and with a good beat

I mostly listen to Classic Rock (Zepplin, Stones, Beatles, The Who, Supertramp, CCR, Queen etc)

However, I'm very into hard rock stuff that has a Black Sabbath undertone to it. An example would include Queens of the Stone Age (my favorite modern band). I also enjoy The White Stripes (one of the better UK bands in a while).

Strangely I also enjoy ambient electronic music. Especially when I'm sleeping, dining, or just relaxing.

If you are speaking of just the instruments, then yes I'd say you're right. However, modern (and most classic) rock influences have absolutely no country in them (that's not to say there aren't artists who have country influences, it's just not the "majority" ). Most classic rock has a folk and blues influence.

Some examples of what I'm talking about are ZZ Top, Led Zepplin, and CCR. All have major "blues" influences in their music. Modern bands with blues influences would include Queens of the Stone Age even.

Lately the trend in country is to sound more like rock. So if anything, I'd say the exact opposite is true.

Do you know about the Ayreon project? Each disk is different, yet still a masterpiece tribute to classic rock.

I was blown away.

Country came from folk, just as rock did, hence why they are so similar.

I agree that modern country is sounding more and more like rock, but look at the classic country artists, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, etc. A lot of their music is more rock and roll than country.

Hell, Johnny used to tour with Chuck Berry.

I think that most people reject country music because it's uncool, not because of the music itself.

I am not much fan of music, but I like bands like:

Placebo
U2
Maroon5
Genesis

I can't think of more. Problem is, music good, but understanding is hard very for me!

So he got one lucky shot and so now you suddenly respect newbs? Part of being a newb is earning the respect of others. Hell, I'm still a newb around here. Coming in and posting in broken English is almost as bad as actually knowing English and posting with shitty grammar.

I agree and disagree. I would replace "almost" with "not nearly". I make large allowances for posters to whom English is obviously not their primary language.

I have no patience for people who's primary (and in a particular case, most likely ONLY*) language is English, and they can't type with even the basics of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure... (not you, Forlorn, of course that's stating the obvious)

Mike.

* There's nothing wrong with only knowing 1 language, but know it well. I only know 1, and I'm being obstinate and refusing to learn Spanish - used almost as often as English around here.

I agree, but it is fun to harass them as newbs. 8)

I can't value someone's opinion when they are posting with bad grammar. Everyone makes mistakes here and there, but when I see it on a regular basis, my opinion of that person steadily declines. It's not too hard to proof read your posts before hitting that submit button.

The only time I don't use propper grammar when typing is on chat programs, but I rarely discuss anything serious on there and it's only with people I know well enough to where we can converse in a more casual manner.

When you come to a forum where you don't know anyone on a personal level, I believe you should put your best foot forward and try to get people to think highly of you.

Despite popular opinion, grammar is important and it is a direct reflection on your level of intelligence.

Obviously, none of this is directed at you. I'm just venting. It's nice to find someone that agrees with me on this point.

I already stated that I'm a newb around here. However, this is not the first forum I've posted on.

Reply to Forlorn

it's a forum! I don't care about proper grammar and crap like that :P

I type whatever flows out my fingers, no thought involved :P

if this were, however, a proper business forum where colleagues and prospective clients were involved then maybe I'd care

otherwise,

Yet you still use propper grammar *for the most part.*

Reply to Forlorn

It's not that hard. It's harder for me to not use it, actually.

I guess that if you we're taught to write in school, properly, and not on an AOL chat-room, it sticks with you. Also, I'm a bookworm. Bibliophile we call ourselves - that helps.

U-hmm...since I was at work, and to get back on topic...

I love The Cure and 80's hairbands...hey...it was my heyday

But since I've gotten Sirius sat. radio, I listen to a lot more stuff.
Blues to techno, but mostly Stern during the day.

Classical (Prefer early 20th century and Romatic period, e.g. Prokofiev, J. Rodrigo, Ravel, Copland, Mahler. . .)

Country (Brad Paisley, Montgomery Gentry are favorites, here)

Bluegrass (Union Station)

Christian contemporary (PFR, DC Talk, John Elefante) / hard music (Bride, Deliverance, Mortification, Pillar)

Broadway / Show tunes

Celtic music (live only, i.e. festivals)

I have a soft spot for 80's pop/rock, too-- Bengals, Cars, The Police, Styx, Heuy Lewis and the News)

:trophy: What a band. Mate of mine got to see them playing Glastonbury 2003 with Grohl on drums, the lucky git. And he never lets an opprtunity to remind me of that go by, the bastage.

Tempting, but I'm busy at the moment. Maybe later.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Not a bad band. I have a friend who plays them far too often, I swear that he will actually wear out the cd. We call him Queenie, it pissed him right off, but you can't let someone get away with only ever playing one band when he has a music collection that covers the best of most genres.

Reply to Tom_Smart

I agree. Another friend of mine constantly plays the Chili Peppers. A band I used to quite like until he constantly bombarded me with them. Yet his record (and I mean vinyl) collection is amazing. Quite eclectic, yet all he does is play the same sodding CD over and over.

I'm actually going to see an 80's cover band tomorrow... They are pretty fun! Check out their website.

I'll get back to my music preferences later... Gotta go get some work done... Well, sit in my chair and get some work down.

**Edit** Hey Fishmahn, you should come out next Saturday too!
