DVD drive Channel settings

I'm having a few problems with my DVD drive and I've had a look in
Device manager to see if my settings are ok.

The problem with DVD drive is that whenever I put a disc in it, it takes
far too long to access the disc and frequently ends up 'Not responding'.

My DVD is on parallel ATA controller - primary channel. I'm assuming the
serial ATA controller is for SATA drives which I don't have.

The setting 'Let bios select transfer mode' is checked and
Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33 is selected. Is this the correct transfer mode
for DVD drives?

As a side note, this is the same setting for my harddrive which is on
the secondary channel.

Are my settings to blame for the access problem with my DVD drive?

Thanks

Motherboard - MSI K8N neo
DVD - NEC 3500
AMD 64 3000

Are you using Microsft's or Nvidias IDE drivers?

Whichever you are using try swapping to the other. Nvidia's driver is known
to cause problems for some ATAPI devices.

Thank you John! I was using Nvidia latest IDE drivers. I replaced them with
the Microsoft driver and all is well. It never occurred to me I could try
the Microsofts driver, I assumed it had to be Nvidia.

As a brilliant bonus I installed my second DVD drive on the same channel
and that too is working now! Before, with the Nvidia drivers it would not
recognise a second drive. I had practically given up after trying many
different 'solutions' I found by google. Thanks again John! Its much
appreciated.

You have to install the Nvidia drivers to use the SATA. Then you end up with
2 devices, a Sata controller and a Parallel controller. It's then still
possible to change the Parrallel controller driver uding Device Manager to
Microsofts driver, leaving the Sata controller with Nvidia's.
