many times in the past when i've upgraded/replaced motherboards etc... i've
managed to keep my xp installation intact, sometimes had to do a repair
install to make it work though.
i just got the above mobo and cpu and xp will not boot. occasionally it gets
as far as the splash screen with the bar moving accross the bottom but then
restarts. it wont even boot into any form of safe mode or last known good
configuration etc...
it wont allow me to do a repair install with my normal xp disc because it
says it needs the disc with sp2 on.
when i put the xp/sp2 disc in it wont boot from it (it used to with my old
mobo and the exact same cd drive).
i've tried altering some bios settings as i know this can often be the
problem, but with no luck.
i really need to keep the xp installation as it is because i've far too much
stuff on the disc to lose by doing a new install.
can anybody suggest/know anything i can do to make it happen ?

The SP2 disk is not bootable it just contains the files for the
update. If you have installed SP2 from this disk but are now doing a
repair install what you need to do assuming you have access to another
computer is create a slipstream install disk from your original XP
disk and the SP 2 disk. Do a Google for Nlite. This app will give you
a gui to create such a disk other wise you will need to know all the
command line switches to do the slip stream setup.
