IDE (EIDE) DMA Mode Inconsistencies

IDE0 = Boot Drive and DVD+RW
IDE1 = Secondary Hard Drive (7200 RPM, ATA 100)
Motherboard=MSI MS-6728
System=WinXP Pro SP2

On my computer, IDE1 doesn't get the full DMA speed (Mode 5). It is
stuck at Mode 2. However, when I move the SecondaryHD to IDE0, then it
is at Mode 5 and the DVD+RW is now at Mode 2. This happens at boot up
so I know it isn't w/ the OS.

Once, I moved the Boot Drive to IDE1. Now, any device on the same
cable is at their hightest speed and any device on IDE0 is at mode 2.

It seems to me the IDE that isn't where the boot drive is gets the
short end of the stick. Is this normal? I was expecting Mode 5 (HDs)
and Mode 4 (DVD+RW) across the board.

I have the latest bios updates. Also, I've tried uninstalling the
Primary and Secondary IDE Channel Controllers.

Thanks.

Are they both 80 wire cables?

Suggest the typical arrangement:

IDE0 - Master (hdd with O/S), Slave (hdd data), 80 wire cable

IDE1 - Master (optical drive), 40 or 80 wire cable

Hdd's will be DMA mode 5 (ATA100)
Optical will be mode 2 maximum

r.

Set the master on a IDE drive at the end,connect slave closest to board on
chain.Also,MSI 6728 doesnt help much,but if it runs on a intel 850 or less
chipset,then download the application accelerator from intel,you can adjust
all of the transfer rate settings from the utility.
